Hard gear shifting - SOLVED!!

Wed Aug 17, 2011 1:18 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

G'day All,

Having trouble shifting up gears from 3rd up when riding hard, after i release the clutch i realise its still in 2nd - potentially dangerous as it's not smooth. If I ride sedately the gears are nice and smooth, almost hard to tell I've changed until I count the downshifts.

Just changed the gearbox oil as I thought this was the problem.
Also re- adjusted the lever position slightly down so it takes less upshifting at speed.

I'm consciously backing off and slowly upshifting and gentle with the clutch now to ensure it's upshifted, not the way I want to ride this bike tho Razz

Anyone got any ideas what I can check next?

You've done everything I'd suggest it seems. The only thing I can think of which you might not have done is adjusted the clutch free travel. Give that a go if you haven't already.

What oil are you running? What weight?

Maybe the shift drum is worn ,
Or the cluthbasket could have worn stoping the clutch working properly . But if it was clutch you should notice it draging when stoped or through other gears .

Fixed!!!

It was the clutch, i adjusted the "free travel" via the lever with no effect.

Today while i had the exhausts off and i was under the bike i noticed the cable was still slack- adjusted at the adjuster underneath and all good =)

Cheers for the responses guys
