Winter is approaching!

Wed Aug 31, 2011 1:51 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Approaching winter in Dubai now, end of September/mid October and it will be cool enough to ride to work again. It's still 40c here today but have been putting the MC28 back together ready for the winter and may even take it out for a ride early tomorrow morning before the sun comes up.

I've fitted the new carbs I picked up a few months back complete with TPS and happy that RC valves operate perfectly now, no ERR codes. For the last few months I've had this niggling feeling that upon putting it back together there would be a load of problems but luckily nothing.

Can anyone advise on pre start up checks after a long idle period? The bike has been idle for approx 4 months now. As mentioned above the carbs are new, the uprated jets from the previous carbs have been cleaned...any other checks?

Very excited about riding again!!

Gotta be honest.... not started mine for 18 months... When I do I'll turn the key, kick it, and pump the tyres up once it's running... just like I do every time! Confused

Quite right Andy, 4 Months, thats not a lay up, just giving it a rest for a few weeks, 4years and you might want to check a few things.

4 months is a long time for me.

Anyway, not all is rosy. Tried starting the bike for a while now but no good. Battery is charged. I get a massive overflow of fuel at some points, any ideas?

Also, just before the last attempt to start it the PGM started flickering (?) every time I put the key in, like a high speed clicking. Not all the time, some times it would be ok. No ERR codes.

Cllicking noise is low battery I'm guessing as just took the battery off and it had lost a lot of charge, even though I charged it earlier.

The other problem may be the float height. The one thing I didn't do before putting the new carbs on...carbs off again in the morning!

Your fuel overflow problem is almost certainly a float bowl issue, either wrong height as you say or sticking float needle.

you normally don't get a clicking noise from a battery.

You do on a mc28 if it does not have enough power to unlock the steering lock...although it's obviously not the battery clicking. Wink

It almost gave me a heart attack! I thought the PGM had fried when I heard the clicking and saw the flickering display. I even put a known working PGM on there to see if it solved the clicking and thought I had blown that too lol. Battery is charged now, just need to get the carbs off (again) and sort them out.

Float height was at 21mm which is way out of spec from what I've read. Will adjust it now.

Not having a good start to the day!

Adjusted float height, put everything back together (or thought I had) went to start the bike and fuel started pissing out...I only forgot to put the fuel hose on the tank lol! Lost all my fuel beforeI knew what was going on, luckily can fill up a tank here for less than 2 quid.

All back together now. Just won't start, it tries to bite and almost goes but won't.

Going to recharge the battery and try again later.

New spark plugs did the trick Smile Up and running now, just got to see how it goes under load.

EDIT: Just took it round the block and its running sweet. RC valves working when they should, not sure why I'm getting the ERR message however as they are setup correctly.
