Lithium Battery question

Mon Sep 10, 2012 1:12 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hello all.
I`m thinking of fitting a Lithium battery onto my MC21 road bike.
Can anyone recommend which type I should buy and is it a case of "fit and forget" or is there a bit more to it ?
Many thanks, Paul.

I've got a Shorai - it doesn't require any more attention than a normal battery.

i asked racingbatteries.com got a reply two possibles but at 130-150pounds i thought was too exspensive but you will save 1kg in weight off the bike so you might think thats worth it and that was for a mc21 road bike

Nah mate mine's on a race bike so no lights etc but i don't think it matters - maybe email Shorai to confirm suitability. I think a saved way more than 1kg over the normal lead/acid when i switched to the Shorai too. Its a pretty good 'bang for the buck' mod in terms of weight saving.

Has anybody looked 'in detail' at the charging method required for Lipos?

I use them a lot, not in my bikes!!, and can tell you that if they are charged incorrectly they are VERY prone to catching fire.
For example, if you were to charge a 11.10 volt(3 cell) lipo pack with an equivalent voltage set charger for either Nihm's or Nicads then, if left, the lipos will just continue accepting charge until they burst.
The chemical inside reaches huge temperatures and they just blow apart setting fire to themselves (cheap lipos) or anything flammable around them.

For a racing bike not using a charging system they will be great, but PLEASE check before using in a bike with a charging system. This is not scare mongering, I have seen the results of incorrect charging. Not nice!

Mike
