hi all
my mc21 lost spark when i was riding it and the battery was totaly died so the rectifier had probably packed up charged the battery but she wont start.
went through all the connecters cleaning and checking earths as i went along still no spark
with a volt meter the battery is 12.3 so thats ok then the bike on 12.25 ok but when i put the kill switch to on it drops to 10.5 fast with no lights on so i went through unpluging looking for a short or broken wire still F.A intel i get to the pgm and unplug the white connector block the left one if you was standing behind it then the volts go back up to 12.25 and also the r/c valves arnt moving so could my pgm died some how when the rectifier stoped working
how would i test the pgm, buy a new one. fix this one and could some one maybe put a volt meter on there nsr with the kill switch on,on and see what your reading please
I would be loathed to fit another PGM-III before more investigation. If it is indeed dead, you need to trace what killed it, or the next one will just go up in smoke too. _________________ Andy.

Again, I would err on the side of caution, and try and find someone nearby with an MC21 that you can fit your PGM-III to, before fitting a replacement unit to your own bike.
I don't want to be all doom and gloom, but I'd hate to see you pay out £xxx for a new PGM, only to see it go up in smoke as soon as you turned the ignition on. _________________ Andy.

I've seen a high number of complaints on various forums, of the early~mid 90s Honda rectifiers, but in 20 years I've only ever personally seen one on an NSR die!
It's hard to say really, without physically looking at the bike. Electrical problems are notoriously difficult to solve remotely.
I would download the Electrex Fault Finder in the Technical section of the main site, and see if that helps trace the problem. Obviously you want to check all the earth/ground points and visually inspect for shorts in the harness too. Something sounds very wrong if you flick the kill switch and there's an instant heavy draw on the battery. To me personally, that would sound very much like a short.
The problem is, if the rectifier did fail, and something got very hot, then it's possible wires have melted within the harness, or somewhere not immediately apparent, that you cannot actually see. That could be within the harness, behind a casing, or inside a component!
You can also use the MC21 wiring diagram as a guide to see which component connect to the white PGM-III connecter, and try isolating/tracing those on-by-one too. _________________ Andy.

1. Check the battery. If its worn out, it can still have 12V without load but the voltage will dip under load.Try and measure the voltage over the disconnected battery with a 35W headlamp bulb connected to it.
2. If the battery is good, there must be a substantial load on it when the switch is on, so there should be smoke or a very hot component somewhere.
3. Try disconnecting the RC valve servo. If the valve is blocked, it will pull a high current. (check also the PGM for any signs of overheating) Shorted RC valve transistors will pull a high current and melt the rubber surrounding them in the PGM
PS: Andy my rectifier burned out and cooked the battery. Luckily nothing else was damaged. I now have one with cooling fins. _________________ Poul

The "one in 20 years" that failed was on my MC21, but given the number of times I've heard talk of failures, I am just surprised I haven't witnessed more. _________________ Andy.

A guy in Greece repairs them. Search for "nsr pgm repair" _________________ Poul

Andy, Do you not remmeber my MC28 at beaulieu had the battery fail? That was the rectifier, it cooked Toms batter as well on the way home.
Hiya - just a word to support you on your search
You will find PGMIII - but you have to be patient. I went looking for ages (six months plus) and then three came up in rapid succession. I bought them all - one for the bike and two spares. Now the horrible bit - AUD$800 plus each for two of them and the other was AUD$450 off that certain auction site sourced out of Japan. And then you take it on faith that they work too..... But stuck the first one in and started on the second kick.
