I have started the engine rebuild process. Prior to cleaning in "soup" and while taping up all orifices I noticed two small open holes (about 1/8") in the clutch cover. One at top front exposed after removing the oil pump and one facing the front. I have searched and the only thing i can find is a picture in the rebuild process clearly showing the top hole. What is the purpose of these holes? Venting? Seems odd to have places where dirt can enter. _________________ MC21R9N track

Sorry to bring up an old thread...but I'm in the same process and have the same question. Does anyone know the purpose of these holes? Can't seem to find any further information via search. I am assumining I need to tape these holes up when cleaning the motor.
both holes are from interstitial space between water pump transmission oil side and coolant side. This will become apparent when you have disassembled the water pump. if either seal leaks then oil or coolant will weep out. though I do not understand why there are two holes. seems redundant. so yes, cover them with tape before you give the engine a good clean. and post some pictures! _________________ MC21R9N track
