1992 mc21 firing promblem

Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:01 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi all.
Having some trouble with my new buy.... Purchased my mc21 about 3weeks ago and have been riding around the city for the last 2 weeks with no trouble and hitting power band with a smile when ever it could.
Today, in the wee hours of the morning i started it with no trouble to let it warm up as i do evryday before heading to work. But after about 10mins of idle it died. Thought nothing of it and started her again to head off to work. about 200m up the road the bike started to shutter and i lost most of my power. i pulled over and she stalled again. Started it up with no problems but when i reved the engine it did not respond as usual i.e. very sluggish. I took off with no power for around 100m and then it slowly (and i mean slowly) got up to a respectable speed. I stopped (no stall) and found that the top pipe was spewing out smoke that was cool, pipe cold too.
I let it sit for a while (by the way, at this point i was late for work...), started her again and both pistons were firing. As soon as i put some load on the engine the top piston stopped firing.
The only difference i have made is putting 95octane fuel in the tank, previous owner only put in 91. Up until the addition of the 95 i had no problems.
Other info: as i said i ride in the city so i am stuck in traffic at idle/low speed for a good period of my journey....
Previous owner was a good guy and told me he had no problems with it but to many toys hence the sale.....
Hope this is enough info for someone to help...
Thank you very much for your time and would welcome any help or suggestions.
Oh yeah i had to wake my pregnant fiancée up to give me a lift to work. ha ha not happy.

Changed the plugs. everything seems to be running ok aside from a little more smoke coming from the top piston compared to the front.....
Not sure if this has fixed the issue or i should be expecting a repeat. Will post again in a few days with an update.
Until then: has anybody got an explanation as to why this may have happened???

Idling for way too long & fouling the plugs? Once it's off cold an heading towards 60 degrees on the temp gauge you should be right to go (not thrash it).
