Gearbox Oil.....?????

Mon Apr 25, 2011 6:11 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I recently got my first NSR250SP MC21, I am thrilled to say the least!
However I am confused by what type of oil to use in the gearbox, btw I am a noob!

The english workshop manual I purchased through one of the memebers here says to use SAE 10w30 4 stroke motorcycle oil

my questions,
is that just plain old engine oil
Should I be using something specifically marked as "gear oil"
I have included a picture of what the local shop figures is the best for my application, says they use it in all the 2 stroke dirtbikes they sell and svc.
He said it id gold color.
On the back the label says it is for 2 stoke transmissions.etc

HELP, I dont want to hurt my new toy!

Since you're running a dry clutch, you could in theory run almost any 10W40 oil, but I would stick to something like a motul expert, that is designed specifically for 2 stroke gear boxes.

The yamalube is ok, I would prefer to get the 10W40 grade though.

I have found the Motul 5100 10w 40 is the best oil for the gearbox - it really makes the box silky smooth with slick gear changes. It makes a huge difference.

Hi Wardlaw,

The yamalube is 100% fine for the gearbox as the same will go for any plain normal 4T motor oil. Yes if you want you can use oil specially formulated for gearboxes like the Motul 5100 and fully synthetic oils but no difference in the long rung...The difference you will only feel for the 1st ride, after that its pretty much the same.

When it comes to 2T oil then only stick with the branded fully synthetic oils like Motul, putoline, castrol. It does not really matter as long as it is fully synthetic and when you have chosen the make for you then stick with that one since the viscosity between different brands differ so will affect your jetting.

Njoy your new toy !

Cheers
Mario
