(wet) clutch basket play

Fri May 20, 2011 12:45 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

i am in process of replacing clutch plates and noticed that the clutch basket (outer basket) moves about 1/8" whilst the drive gear does not move at all. is there supposed to be any freeplay between the gear and basket?

Do you mean that with the plates fitted the basket moves a small amount before the shaft moves?

no plates are installed. the outer basket is installed on the transmission shaft. the outer basket turns about 1/8" while the large gear on the back side of the basket is held fixed.

or you can remove the clutch basket and whilst in your hand turn the gear on the back side back and forth, again about 1/8" at the outer radius.

there are some type of rivets that attach the steel gear to the aluminum basket. they do not appear to be removable. it's my guess that this should be a rigid assembly and that wear/use/abuse has loosened this connection. the basket has a good bit of wear. looking to find out if it needs replacement or if this slack is normal. thanks.

maybe you can ride the bike and all good and nice but normally there shouldnt be free play there...
