hi
i need to remove the swing arm bolt to fit a torque arm,can anyone tell me what to look out for?do i need to support the engine or swing arm?or will it sit close its correct position because of its other mounting points?
My guess would be that you'd at least have to disconnect/remove the rear shock and it's mouints and take off the swingarm to give yourself enough room to work. I'd look to take the bodywork off as well and then use the exposed subframe to hang/support the back end.
The other alternative is to stand there bemused with a spanner in my hand and wait for Fontyyy/Andy/Steve to get so fustrated that they do it for me
Hmmmm, for sure you don't want to be pulling that massive bolt out of the swingarm while the bike sat on its side stand!
The engine won't go anywhere but the swingarm is held in place by nothing else, pull that bolt out and the bike will probably fall over. For sure you won't be able to get the bolt back in.
You're going to need the bike (i.e. the frame) held up by "something", possibly a strap round a ceiling rafter and maybe the rear subframe or something under the engine and a front wheels stand. Then something else to hold the rear wheel where it is (you want the rear wheel unweighted)
When you remove that long bolt all that holds the swingarm in place is the rear shock, that's a spring and numerous pivots.
I've never done this (why would I?) so look, think and learn as you go. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
when I did that I took the bodywork off, took the exhaust off, had the bike supported by wood blocks under the engine. Had the swingarm held by a paddock stand, undid the lower mounting bolts for the rear shock and then the swingarm bolt came out super easy! I took a pic and if I can find it I will post it!
cheers guys
i am not completely new to doing this sort of thing, done some work on my dirt bikes over the years so would probally be ok but it is always good to get some ideas from others who have done it before so to avoid common mistakes.and wardlaw if you can find the photo that would be great.
