MC16 gear selection issues

Tue Mar 06, 2012 7:53 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi everyone,
I'm in the process of resurrecting a MC16 that was given to me as a basket case. The problem I've got at the moment is with the gearbox. I can only seem to select one gear up and one gear down on the gearbox, it's the same with all the clutch plates removed too. The gears all look ok and the selector forks look straight. Am I missing something???? Looking online these gearboxes seem relativly bullet proof ( cant only find one messed up gearbox, and mine looks nothing like that!!!) so I'm wondering if I've missed something obvious or if it's just because the engines not running etc???? ( grasping at starws now!!!) Engine is out of the frame and has been since I got the bike. The rest of the engine all looks spot on so it would be a shame if I'm scuppered by a dodgy gearbox!!!
Any help would be greatfuly received, I'm desperate to get this bike sorted!
Thanks
Paul

Ok, as suspected I was missing something! Thanks Jonnymac! When I tried it before I stripped the motor, I think the clutch plates were all stuck from standing for so long, then I stripped the motor, clutch and gearbox etc. What I failed to do after checking and refitting the gearbox was to gently rock the final drive shaft whilst selecting a gear to help it engage!! Idiot!!!

With a gentle rock of the final drive output shaft all gears snick in perfectly!!!

Thanks again to Jonnymac for saving me from some serious head scratching! I can now finish the engine build and get it back in the frame.

Thanks again!
