Motorcycle Crating Service

Mon Nov 14, 2011 5:00 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Evening all,

Soon I will be the proud owner of Johnnymac's Cabin 21SP...deposit paid, shipping being sorted, final payment this week...one thing I'm struggling with though is finding a decent, reasonably priced crating service and shipping agent.

Does anyone have any recommended services for crating/international shipping?

I was going to use my company's shipping agent but they won't ship personal items on our account due to some restrictions on our trade license.

I've so far had two quotes; one at 650 quid sea freight, door to door service including crating carried out at sellers home. One at 450 quid sea freight, no collection (bike would need to be delivered to Felixstowe depot for crating there). 20 days from UK to Dubai.

I have a few air freight quotes coming in the next few hours and it only takes 3 days to get here so obviously that's much better for geting the bike here sooner, but wondering how much cost difference will be?

Would appreciate feedback or info from anyone with past experiences with shipping companies.

Cheers

You may be surprised by the airfreight . I have sent something with DHL and i think that the price was not too bad .
They used the volume of the box to calculate the price and did not worry too much about the weight of it .
Do you need a police clearance before it leaves ?

I shipped an MC28 to Italy a few years back and one thing I can reccomend is using an old bike shipping crate from a dealers. My local Yamaha dealer gave me an old crate for free. saved him disposing of it.

It had a timber base with cardboard side. I have a picture somewhere......

No sure who the agent was as the buyer arranged that.

Of course this all depends on John getting a crate for you.....

Imagine Tom's surprise when he opened that crate and found two kids though!

Just recieved the best quote yet from Bikemovers.co.uk (anyone heard or used them?).

455 quid, collected from Johnny, crated at his place and sea freighted to Jebel Ali port in Dubai...up to 20 days shipping. I have to sort out duty at my end which is 5% value but as I won't be using insurance I'll get a Honda dealer to set a low valuation to reduce that 5%.

Two more quotes to come, if nothing beats Bikemovers I'll go with them and hopefully have it shipped here end of next week (takes 7 days for the cash to reach Johnny's bank). Will then have the bike around Christmas day Very Happy and ready for Gulf Bike Week to show it off Very Happy

Very good reputation though.

Have you considered what 20 days in salty air is going to do your bike if you do ship it by sea?

Yes they quoted me quite high but also crate the bike rather than just slinging it in a container. Cheapest isn't always best but I agree the most expensive isn't either sometimes.
