hey guys, i have had an mc16 for 11yrs now, the day i brought her home i had a broken piston skirt on the front .
Since that ive been looking for parts which i cant find.,I finally may be able to get an mc18 engine from japan.( i live in the caribbean)
Its hard to tell the guys who are going what i need like the entire mc18 harness, so incase the dont bring it, i would really like to know if the mc16 harness will allow the mc18 engine to work.
Stuff like pickups to the cdi from the engine cover, and wires for the coils.I have never seen an mc18, much less the electricals. My country has 2 nsr's both mc16 and both of them not working.I tried but i cant locate the other. She has been inside my room 11yrs going on 12.
Any detailed help would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou guys., btw i envy anyone who has access to these parts and bikes.
Your title is misleading! Fitting MC16 electrics/electronics to an MC18 would be a step backwards, but fitting an MC18 motor to an MC16 would be an upgrade.
Anyway, the motor doesn't care what system you use to run it... it's "dumb". However, the MC18 flywheel and the port timing will be compromised.
The MC16 harness will almost certainly NOT connect directly to the terminals on the MC18 stator and pulser coils (flywheel pick-ups), but there is nothing to stop you splicing in the MC16 ones onto the MC18 components.
There is no reason you can't make it work... other than the MC18 motor isn't going to fit your MC16 very easily! The MC16 motor is solidly mounted like the HRC RS's, whereas the 1988 motors onwards are all rubber mounted. You will need to turn up some spacers and press them into the MC18 crank cases.
Again, no reason why, with a little patience, it can't be made to work.
A normal* MC16 motor will never really make much more than low 50's hp, due to it's internal configuration and electronics, but an MC18 motor has the potential to make 61~62hp, in completely standard trim. You should be able to realise most of the 60+hp in your MC16 chassis, but not all of it. To attain maximum performance you will need the MC18 electronics, expansion chambers, and probably carbs**, which are all oprimised to the MC18 motor's configuration.
You will probably find a 1988 MC18 R2/4J motor is more compatible with the MC16 systems than a 1989 motor. The 1988 flywheel is also the same size as the MC16.
* HRC TT-F3 NSR250RK MC16 is rated at 68ps.
** HRC TT-F3 NSR250RK MC16 runs 28mm carbs.
ALL this has been covered on the forum before. Please try searching the forum first in future, before simply "bumping" a topic because you don't get a response within the first day or two. _________________ Andy.

The mc18 Pulse coil connector will fit the mc16 loom, I've done it the other way (ie mc18 electrics onto an mc16). The '16 flywheel did not work with the '18 electrics (on the pgm2 setup anyway) due to the size of the 'trigger' area on the flywheel. The '16 has one about 1/2" long and the '18 has 2 smaller ones.
So I'd guess with the '16 flywheel, your mc18 will run with a '16 loom.
It would, as Andy states, be a step backwards though. Like putting '16 wheels on a '21. Or a '28 swingarm into anything else.. _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
Thankyou guys, i will search next time, i have only seen two nsr's in my life, both mc16, so i dont even know what the small stuff like the mc18 flywheel looks like, im looking at all my options.
So long as it all matches up! But a lot of the internals are exchangeable between models. MC18 Cylinders will fit the '16 no bother.. _________________ More **** two strokes than you can shake a **** stick at.
