Hello everyone,
After a long search I’ve finally got my first 2 stroke. A 1990 NSR250(R7L) MC21 (Red/White/Blue). All original with 3740 Kms on the clock. See the attached pictures. The frames serial number indicates it’s early in the model year and the engine number is close to the frame number. I believe this bike was imported into Canada from Japan in 2004/5. It does have some bumps and bruises but all in all a very good place to start. It has the original tires from what the date codes say and the gas tank shows no signs of rust inside. The only real corrosion on the bike is on the front forks.
The challenge is that it has not been running since 2009 so any advice on ‘waking it up properly’ would be much appreciated. I don’t want to cause any damage starting it up after it’s sat for awhile. My goal is to keep it as original as possible and ride it as much as possible. I’m really looking forward to the NSR riding experience.
As an example of where I want to take this bike I’ve included a few photos of a bike I purchased from the original owner sometime ago (sorry it’s a 4 stroke and not a Honda) and brought back to as original condition as possible. It is a fantastic ride.
Just want to say thanks for all the information in this forum. It’s invaluable when you’re out looking to buy one of these very special 2 stroke bikes.
All the best in the New Year!

Nice '21R! Like you say, looks like a good solid base to start from.
Not much material there for a "members build", but if you have any restoration tips (looks like you know how to get good results), I know there are others here that will be interested to see your methods. _________________ Andy.

That looks like a good bike to start from, I have got a couple of NSR's that I have had to recondition and the best thing I would say to start is change all oils and coolant as you can never be sure what someone else has done! All the info on how to bleed two stroke and cooling systems is on here that is how I found it out. You should change the tyres as I learnt this the hard way when I brought an MC18SP and was so excited to take it for it's first spin that I risked it on the old tyres and binned it on the first corner!
Keep us posted on your progress.

welcome mate i would change the tyres as well, when i got mine it had some horrid old yokohamas on,and i had a big front end slide the first time i rode it in anger,i didnt crash luckily, but i went and got some new dunlops put on the next day _________________ ive seen more tarts than mr kipling
Alpha 10 is no longer made, I think they are up to Alpha 12. I haven't had any experience with the new Dunlops so I can't say. They have been discussed in another thread a couple of months ago.
I have been runnning Continental Sports Attacks and they have been amazingly good grip, expensive here in Aus and most likely will be in Asia.

H-rated Dunlop Qualifers, work very well on an NSR.

Duggs63 asked a similar question recently.

The first thing I would do is take the pipes off and spark plugs out. Disconnect the cables from the power valves and see if you can turn them by hand.
Look up the exhaust ports to see if everything looks ok. Maybe spray a small amount of CRC or WD40 into the barrels.
Then apply pressure to the kick starter by hand to make sure it turns over OK.
Possibly replace the 2 stroke oil and bleed the oil lines to the carbs.
Give the carbs a good clean and check the jetting is near standard. Have a look at the reeds while the carbs are off and look through to the crankshaft.
The list could get quite big, but that's a start at least. _________________ [color=#808080][size=9]Yes,.. I too know how to waste Time and Money,...
Thanks to everyone for the advice. Much appreciated.
The information on the correct tires and what to do with the engine is a great help.
Thanks again,
