Ive recently brought a RS250 front wheel although im a little confused about the disc bolt holes, they look to me as if they've been bored out and a heli coil inserted about 5mm below the surface. I dont own a RS so i dont know weather this is normal and a shouldered disc bolt is meant to be used???
RS 250 front wheels dont have a shouldered bolt, they are just the same as ordinary NSR wheels (not magteks), looks like it has had a bit of drama in the past and been repaired, depends how much thread is in there, whether you trust it or not. I'm sure this same wheel was the subject of debate on another forum. _________________ Proud Father of , 05 ktm 400exc supermoto 2018 honda crf rx supermoto
On the PB forum? yes that was me. i was looking for options to sorting the problem by either using shouldered bolts or drilling out and using inserts but thought id seek advise here before doing anything drastic. But seeing as they dont use shouldered bolts i may go with the insert option.
The disc bolt threads on RS / HRC mag wheels are much more vulnerable to stripping, with repeated disc changes, compared to Magtek or Standard Alloy NSR wheels.
I have many of these RS front wheels and about 50% of them now have helicoiled threads and are working out fine. _________________ Rich

Thats good to hear rich, its not the fact that its helicoiled that bothers me its that mine have the top part of the hole bored out and only about 4-5mm of helicoil below that. It concerns me that if i didnt use a shouldered bolt that there might not be enough support when the brakes are used?
Are yours just helicoiled like mine with the bored out space at the top of the hole? have you used keenserts or timeserts?
Ive just noticed Probolt sell some Ti disc bolts for galespeed discs which are shouldered so im considering buying these and boring out the holes on the disc to suit, i have a spare set of PFM carriers so it doesnt bother me drilling them. Or do you think i worrying to much and normal bolts will be fine?
Another solution I'd think about is having some small collars made to fit in the larger hole at the top.
Have them made to tap in with a bit of bearing fit.
This way you can keep everything else standard.

Thats a good idea, i could get some made from ali no problem and then use the race spec Ti bolts i originally brought for them
