I plan to rebuild my engine and give it a good clean. Actually, more than I good clean, I plan to sand blast the engine. Is this advisable? Any tips anyone can give me.
Make sure all the "holes" are plugged (i.e. exhaust ports, coolant passageways, inside engine mounts etc.) and absolutely NO gasket faces are visible. If you can, use an old flywheel cover or something to protect that side of the casing, and heavy duty "Duck Tape" (duct tape) on areas you wish to avoid.
Be extremely careful to still avoid the masked areas as the blasting will remove the tape very quickly!
Use the finest grit possible (you'd actually be better of with a small bead blaster than a sand blaster), and use a low power setting.
CLEAN EVERYTHING THOUROUGHLY AFTER!!! Then clean it again!!! _________________ Andy.

If you are blasting it then you will need to cover with a high temp laquer afterwards, otherwise the dirt will accumulate in every microscopic pore caused by the beads/grit. If you are blasting I agree with Andy. Use bead not grit. Personally I would save time and effort and get the motor "vapour blasted" instead.
The last engine I rebuilt was filthy and I used a WD40/degreaser and petrol mix which I left on for about an hour. I then scubed off with a scourer with some more degreaser and then rinsed off with water. Dried it and sprayed with gallons of WD and all the parts came up like new, literally... I'd be worried about blasting when 2 hours work got the result I was hoping for. _________________ NSR300R - Why did i ever have a 250...
Also alloy wheel cleaner or truck wash, you can get them from any car valeters or valet suppliers, they are both a acid and will degrease and clean the alloy and make it nice and silver, then a quick polish with autosol and it will look like chrome, apply it with one of those pump sprays, its the only stuff that will get burnt on brake dust off alloy wheels.

Clit bang ? I thought you were being smutty then
I've seen Andy use the soup - it works very well even if he did have to hunt around for one particular ingredient.
Personally I'd not grit brast it at all - too much damage and abrasion. Consider a plasma blast and / or glass bead blasting. The plasma pressure blast will make it look new but leaves the surface porus and it collects crap and will corrode quickly without some form of surface treatment. Glass bead blasting is really neat though - leaves the surface with a sort of glossy finish and resists the elements quite well as it's not so abrasive.
Have fun.. _________________ These aren't the droids you're looking for.
