Validating a Rothmans MC28

Sat Oct 20, 2012 5:52 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Just having a look at my bike (MC28 Rothmans) as there has been some "mentions" about lessor models with a Rothmans over coat posing as the real thing!

I know the exact model is NSR250R3R and about checking the paint code label on the sub frame, the dry clutch, also the blue adjusters at the top of the forks (easily changed) I'm unsure regards the frame numbers though, it says on here the NSR250R3R frame numbers are 1000001-1006013 does that mean the frame number on my bike should be any number from 1000001 up to 1006013 ??

Thanks in advance
H

Unfortunately, it's all but impossible to narrow it down to a particular model Your only chance would be to contact Honda Japan, but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

There must have been many thousands of Rothman's SPs over the years! And common folklore even has it that dealers in Japan would 'convert' other SPs to Rothman's colours due to high demand.

If the frame number falls in the correct range, the relevant bits are SP, and the bodywork is original, then I would be happy with that.

Yeah, I would say so. The most important thing really, is having the correct combination of parts.

It is a bit of a shame really, that they didn't take consecutive numbers off the production line to build into SPs, but such is life!

I gave my chassis number to my local Honda dealer when ordering parts and he typed it into his computer and immediately stated the model back to me.... (mine is an SE posing as a rothmans which I already knew...) Give your local dealer a call and ask him to check... even if you have to but a seal or something.... worth a try.

Thanks! have had a look at the sub frame label on mine (attached) and checked the number/paint code and thankfully it all aligns to the Rothmans, the R3R reference on the label was also a relief, theres no way the label had been changed given it started to disintegrate when I started to peel it.......
I'll ask my local dealer to see if/how they check it though!
Cheers

Nothing to stop a subframe being swapped after a shunt, if it's been bent... or if someone's really hell bent on "making" an SP!

But it would take some one knowing their stuff to replace it with a sub frame with the label from the exact same model bike... As was said before, at this point in the game and if you didn't buy it at the price point of a showroom condition rothmans, if it has all the parts that should be good in most minds.

Plenty have been around here long enough to know it, consider it, and/or even do it. Trust me! I've seen people trying to buy SP subframes, and asking for the sticker to be checked in the past!

I'm sure there are even more in Japan than here, more than capable of "faking" an SP too. And not so long ago, those stickers were still available from Honda.

I'm just playing Devil's Advocate, but as I've already said, if it's the right combination of parts, and original bodywork, be happy with it. At the end of the day, no-one is going to be able to tell you if it's got an SE shock, an SE transmission, SE heads and barrels, SE or R PGM, or just about anything else apart from the Magteks!
