Well, I seem to have a buggered kickstarter lever on my MC21. Am I correct in assuming that the assembly ("kickstarter knuckle", per the parts manual: part reference #7 on I-12) that fits over the spline is supposed to be threaded on both sides of the spline? Mine looks to be completely stripped on the side where the flange bolt enters, as is the bolt.
Can a heli-coil be used to salvage the knuckle assembly?
And is the bolt, described as a 8mm x 25mm "locking" bolt, anything special or is it just a flange bolt of that size, with the "locking" referring only to its function to secure the kickstarter knuckle?
Finally, assuming I eventually get this far, when re-mounting the new bolt, it should line up or cross the spline where the the spline threads are absent, thereby situating the kickstarter knuckle, correct? I would really appreciate any help. Too old to bump start it all the time! Thanks. _________________ -Jim

The kick starter knuckle is threaded on one side only. This is so it can clamp slightly as it is tightened.
The bolt need not be anything special, but I would use a high tensile bolt if possible.
And yes, the bolt positions on the cut-away part of the spline. This sets how far on the spline the knuckle sits. _________________ [color=#808080][size=9]Yes,.. I too know how to waste Time and Money,...
man, that is great news that the threads are only supposed to be on one side of the knuckle! So the threads on the knuckle on the opposite side of the spline are enough to secure the bolt? Cool. No helicoil, yay! Sounds then like I just need to find a good quality 8 x 25mm flange bolt and make sure I situate it at the right place on the spline. From what I can see, if the knuckle is forward or aft of the right place on the spline, the spline threads will partially block the progress of the bolt. I think that's somehow the reason my original bolt stripped. Anyway, a big thanks for the info! _________________ -Jim
