PGM identification

Tue Mar 19, 2013 7:10 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hui guys can anyone help with how to identify which model of PGM a unit actually is please?

Most of the units I see do not have the Honda part number on them only some inked on numbers that must the manufacturers code.

Many thanks in advance.

What are you looking for exactly? The serial numbers on stock PGMs are all but irrelevant. Any PGM-I will work on any 1988, any PGM-II will work on any 1989, any PGM-III will work on any MC21, and any PGM-IV (with corresponding card) will work on any MC28.

Only if you try tarting about with HRC PGMs will you have problems. They DO NOT work on standard bikes, and standard PGMs are perfectly capable of in excess of 70hp.

There was a myth long ago about the PGM-III with the red serial code being a better unit, but we've tried them all, and there's no detectable difference! I'm not saying different codes aren't different inside, but the difference is undetectable. It could just be something as simple as different capacitors or PCB routing!

PGM's

Hi Andy thanks for the reply.

The parts book for the MC21 lists 3 different PGM units for the various levels (different end numbers 830, 831 and 901).

I was just wondering how you could identify which one you have because all the ones I have seen do not have the part number on them. They all do have an inked code on them which has a manufacturer code and then a date/batch code after it in smaller letters.

Cheers

It doesn't matter! You can use any of them, and they will all perform equally well. As I said in my previous post, "no detectable difference".

I mapped the ignition timing of a 'normal PGM III and then got excited when I mapped a "Code Red" PGM III.

Same......
