Why does the top cylinder run leaner jetting to the bottom one?

Because of the layout of the cylinders against the inlets.

Meaning the bottom cylinder has a longer inlet tract? Is that correct?

Why did they not make the crank cases in such a way that they had identical lengths?

And why are the exhaust stubs different lenghts ... I know, i know, i really am thick, i have accepted it. Very Happy

Because then you have to put a carb down by the front wheel (like a TZ) and it makes a mess of everything.

The RS (and the NSR devoid of it's road gubbins) and even the 500V is a superb exercise in keeping things simple and making them easy to work on.
