Recently had an engine failure , and am now in the process of purchasing parts. I see by the posts that I have options for the pistons used in the mc16..but can I use a later model barrel? or is the mc16 barrel exclusive .
I have inquired with them , but they suggested I ask you all on the forum....Has anyone ever used a Tyga high performance top end rebuild kit on an MC16?
Appreciate any input on this ..thank you.
The mc18 cylinders & heads will straight fit your bike.
But then, you might want to consider some small modifications here and there, including a later (& more efficient water pump), later radiator etc. _________________ 2t-racelab.com
MC18 barrels are a direct fit, and you can use MC16 heads with them, if you want. You can also use MC18 heads, of course. The MC18 has slightly higher compression, but don't fall into the "compression is good" trap that most do... it's VERY easy to have too much compression on an NSR; they don't need it!
You can also fit MC21 or MC28 barrels and heads, if you wish. Again, a direct bolt-on fit. Do some research on "R" and "SE/SP" spec. Simple way to look at it is don't mix barrels and heads.
Fitting 88~97 barrels/heads isn't going to net you huge gains. The MC16 is limited by the ignition, expansion chambers, and its crankcases too. It also runs 28mm carbs, although so does the MC16 HRC F3, and that's rated at 68hp!
There is however huge tuning potential for the MC16, if you're willing to spend both the time and money to do it. A 40% power increase is very realistic, if you know what you are doing. _________________ Andy.

You want to look at the exhaust port "windows", not the outlet. An MC16 HRC barrel has a bigger outlet than an MC18! _________________ Andy.

thanx for the info....the one original salvageable barrel from the engine and one that I purchased are the same part..however I see the original one is marked as a B , and although it was to be a B, by part # as well, the one I bought has turned out to be marked with an A..I have brand new OEM unmarked pistons to be installed. The original barrel's chrome inside diameter surface is clean and unmarked , the one I have managed to get so far appears to have a slight crack like mark between the exhaust ports...I am concerned about this and also about the clearances ...Unless I am mistaken the A B C barrels are identified as such for size and clearance purposes...and so too this would be for the B no mark and D pistons ...Is there someone who has experience in what the sizes and corresponding clearance are , and what tolerances I could deem acceptable or get away with without re chroming the barrels?...If I have to have the chrome plating in the barrels restored, does anyone have a recommendation as to who is the best suited for the job. and the costs...here it costs approximately 300...to 400 Can dollars to do each one !
