MC28 Rebuild

Hi Folks,

Here's my MC28 R3R under renovation and a few pictures from the strip down.

I bought it from overseas and to be frank I was ripped off. I've bought 4 bikes from overseas now and the first 3 was as I expected. Yes I did get photos etc sent but it sure wasn't the bike I got! Anyway, I was so hacked of with it I stripped it down in a day virtually just after I got it. I figured apart from the engine and swing arm needing vapour blasted I'd be able to renovate most of it myself. Didn't turn out that way..........numerous parts have had to be bought/sourced. Corrosion and decay was worse than I thought before stripping it down. But a lot of elbow grease and effort went into what was salvageable.

The engine was stripped for vapour blasting. New crank needed. Ouch! One of the heads had been torqued up to the barrel and had debris trapped causing damage and head and barrel had to be skimmed. All bearings and seals as well as the fasteners were renewed on the rebuild. As new now.

Luckily an MC28 was being broken down country so salvaged a lot of nice parts from that. My lower fairings had been butchered for non OEM exhausts and the lugs broken and held together with cable ties. Honda no longer have R3R lowers so bought lowers from a R3S. All white when the decals removed. They are getting painted and OEM decals applied. The Magtek's are also getting renovated, coated and painted at present. It's costing the equivalent of 200 GBP for each wheel. Ouch! Other panels and tank were in A1 condition.

I managed to source a set of OEM exhausts for it on eBay UK for 450 GBP. Currently coming via sea. The guy said they had only done 1200km so as new.

I've got 6 other Honda's that I've got back to VGC and as stock but this one has been by far and a way the biggest challenge. It's been very enjoyable though bar the cost. I hope to have it 100% together in the next few months.

Looking good, looking at the state that motor was in, must have been in the tsunami, most people would have walked away from that one, but all credit to you. Just got to ask though Dellboy, did you buy it off Boycie?.

He had that NSR for 15 years, and it's only had 4 sets of bodywork, 3 motors, and 2 frames!

Here is a look at the front end renovated. Big improvement over the previous picture when I stripped it down. There were not many new parts here. Just blasted and painted. The PGM-F1 case I did not want to chance vapour blasting so that was just rubbed down and made best as possible with Autosol.

Getting the Magteks back this week so the bike should be 100% complete. Then the hard part.........getting it running.

Gee that engine and rear sets came up nice after the vapour blasting. Hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions? I imagine you dismantled the engine before having the blasting done? Did you have the swingarm rod / locknut etc blasted as well?

Hi Jim,

Yes I stripped the engine down 100% and had the parts vapour blasted. It's done in water and the medium used is very, very fine and after it's done you have to make sure all the fine blast material is removed. Clean water hose is fine. I seriously doubt you could guarantee that the material is not going to get into anywhere if you leave the engine intact.

The swing arm was done completely too and like new. The rod wasn't done but the nut and castle nut were. New bearings were then put in the swing arm. I also had the cast parts on the frame done. It's amazing but all the guy had to do to mask of the extruded part (rails) of the frame was put some electrical tape on just behind the welds and the blast did no harm at all to the tape!

It was not too expensive for the vapour blasting. Maybe about 400 NZD all up. Well worth it. Wish the rest of the build was as cheap!

Thanks Derek,

Appreciate the details. I want to get my frame and swingarm and assorted bits done too but I wanted to make sure the process won't remove the factory anodizing. If you can just tape up the extruded parts then that's great. There is a fellow here near Brisbane (wetblasting.net) who does wet blasting which removes the anodizing and then micro shot-peenes / burnishes the alloy. Is this similar to what you had done?

A well sorted NSR is a good little track tool, too! Steve's F3 was better than any NF5 we've tested, and not far off many early tuned NX5s. It was an extreme example though, but mid to high 60's are well within most people's budgets, and you won't need to be replacing pistons and rings every couple of days, and cranks every 1200 miles!
