Tightening sequence of crankcase bolts

Tue Oct 14, 2014 7:04 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

The Honda manual suggests a different tightening sequence for the crankcase bolts than this page does: http://nsr-world.com/workshop/rebuild/rebuild-3.php

Honda suggests to tighten the 8 mm bolts first (in a criss-cross pattern), that is the 5 bottom bolts plus the 8mm bolt on the top. Then the manual tells you to tighten the four 6 mm top bolts, first the inner two, then the outer two.

Nsr-world tells you to tighten the top bolts first including the top 8mm bolt, starting on the outside. Then the lower 5 bolts, again outer bolts first.

I tend to follow Honda's instructions because this is the way I have learned it (start with inner bolts), also I would think that the top 8 mm bolt should be tightened together with the lower 8 mm bolts and the "additional" 6 mm top bolts should be tightened last.

Does anyone know the reason why nsr-world recommends a completely different scheme? I don't want to ignore their advice lightheartedly.

Thanks,
gepe.
