New member - NSW, Australia

Hi all,

I'm not the sort to make a grand entrance but thought I'd politely introduce myself as a new NSR owner/forum member.

I'm on the central coast, NSW and recently picked up an mc21. It's my first NSR, but I've spent a fair amount of seat time on a vj22 in what seems like a previous life. Funny, never thought i'd own another 2t, and just clicking over 34yo I find myself with this, who'd have known?

Joined the forums of course to learn, and meet others with similar interests. I'm not racer, though have dabbled with it in the past (rather unsuccessfully I should humbly add).

The bike itself is not the best example, but probably not the worst either. I was unable to test ride the machine prior to purchase but it seemed in reasonable order. I knew the bike was not an original example as it appears to have an se/sp mc21 motor (kv3L heads and dry clutch, D barrel carbs), remote reservoir oem rear shock, non-adjustable forks, R-model white wheels, and a slight mix of R/SE panels.

Unfortunately I've encountered numerous teething issues and have hardly had any seat time as yet. Not exactly the honeymoon period you hope for when buying second hand stuff, but that's life. At least I enjoy working on bikes at least as much as riding (probably because I manage a better job at the former, on account of being such an average rider).

I bought it with the intention of a slow hobby restoration and to hold onto it as far into the future as I can see...hoping to have it in my sunset years when these great machines are but a distant memory for most. Filled with weekend rides/track days/schools along the way of course. I imagine there are others here with similar sentiments.

Am probably best of leaving a run down of the specific issues I've encountered for a technical thread. But will finish up by saying that I am looking for a full set of engine mount rubbers and torque arm bushes as quickly as possible. Think I can get most of these from japan in 3-4 weeks, but hoping for quicker options if anyone has any advice.

Cheers for reading, if you made it this far.
Scott

Welcome to the forum, Scott, and looking forward to a build/restoration thread sometime.

Some of the MC21 engine mounting rubbers are discontinued, however we can do a full set of MC28 rubbers. One of the torque link bushes (rearward) is discontinued, and would need to be custom machined. A local engineering shop may be best for you, but we could provide a bush for you too, if required.

Hi Scott.

Its a small world. My name is Scott and I'm also from the central coast NSW. Im up at Woongarrah.
In march this year i finished a year long project to fully restore a Rothmans MC21. (not totally finished) but its running sweet.
If you need any help with your bike I can pass on any knowledge I have gained.
I also have a contact in Japan that i can get just about any part required.
I think i have a full set of engine mounts lying round somewhere. I can sell them to you and ill just get another set from my mate.

Post up a few pics.
Cheers

Hi guys, thanks for the warm welcome.

Andy - I appreciate your offer to assist, but Scott (thommo) may be able to offer some local support from 'up the road' (just about, anyways). I'll try that first and see how we go.

Scott - Coincidence indeed! I'm in Tumbi, not far away. Would be happy to catch up and have a yarn to discuss your build. If you happened to have a set of mounts and are happy to part with them, well that would just be awesome. I'll PM you my mobile # if you want to fire me a txt and I'll get in touch with you.

I'll get some teaser photos up later this evening. In the mean time, a quick run down on the engine mount situation and bike history.

As far as I can tell, the bike started life as a red/white/blue r7n '90 model. Some of the panels, the motor and rear shock appear to be from a '92 SE model. The swap was performed just prior to sale so I don't think the bike received a decent 'shakedown ride'.

On the first ride I immediately noticed a bad vibration and clunking at 5000-6000 rpms. The torque arm is installed, though the bushes are a little sloppy, however I noticed the rear right upper engine mount is missing (I have only one item 17 from the mc21 J-14 microfishe instead of two). Some gentle pressure on some vice grips locked to the torque arm allowed me to rock the engine some 3-5mm. A look at the front engine mounts shows that they have significant movement too.

Looking at the parts microfische, it shows different engine mount part numbers for the r7n model vs all others. I'm assuming that the main frame remained unchanged, and the engine cases (as far as mounting goes) remained unchanged, and you could use either the 'old' - discontinued - r7n mounts, or the newer style mounts, so long as you don't mix and match between. If any of you could verify this, it would help set me straight and I'll be sure I am sourcing the correct ones to address the problem.

When I drop the motor I'll have a better idea of what i'm working with, but any insight in the mean time would be welcomed.

Cheers
Scott

Hey mate.
Yeah let us know your number and ill try and find all the mounts i have tomorrow.
I can show you what they look like and where they all go.

Im hoping the vibration/ knocking is the mounts. Have you listened to the bottom end.
It could be engine bearings.

Cheers

Pic of the bike should be available here:

Scott - I wouldn't say I know enough to rule anything out, but the clunking was harsh enough that I could feel it strongly through the pegs and bars, and the frequency seems to correspond with power pulses through the driveline. I wouldn't expect a bearing to 'feel' that way - but i've been wrong before!

The bottom end is sure quieter than every rgv i've heard, hopefully that's a good sign. The shifting was knotchy too, which seems to align with comments here about floating engines making for awkward gearshifts. Will fire you a pm now.
