MC21se full restoration coming up

Thu Apr 07, 2016 4:04 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi to all, I'm new to this great forum,

I’ve spent the last couple months doing some general research on the 1992 NSR250se and am about to embark on a ground up restoration project. From what I have seen this is the go to site for anything NSR related and I am hoping for a little guidance from people with way more knowledge than me.

Firstly, a short history as to how I came about this NSR250. Back in our younger days my brother and I used to race 250 production class here in Australia, I rode an RGV250 whilst my brother opted for the NSR250se. We spent just over four years racing the bikes with many great memories. When we stopped racing I sold my RGV but my brother kept his NSR (he loved his NSR!) and put it back on the road as he had kept all his original road going body work. As the years passed I started to do some marshalling at our local ride days (eastern creek raceway). My brother again wanted back on the track but his NSR was ready for an engine rebuild before it was to go back on the track. For the next six months my brother did some research and created a wish list for his NSR, mostly parts from Tyga performance like a modern gp style race fairing, reeds, pipes, etc and I was going to do most of the engine work on it. It was not long after this that my brother was diagnosed with cancer and this project was shelved. He beat the first lot of cancer only to be hit with a second round which he couldn’t beat. So I am now going to rebuild his bike to the specs he wanted and get it back on the track in his honour. The bike will be used for track days and club racing.

I have spent the last few weeks reading through a multitude of the posts on this site, all of which have been great in building my knowledge of the NSR. I have also gone over the Tyga performance website with regard to parts, engine tune up and modifications. I feel confident stripping the bike and rebuilding it (ex-mechanic albeit a long time ago) but will require specialist help for things like the crank and porting (It’s been way to long since I’ve done any real port work and a lot of it was on car engines). From what I have read on this site Andy is the go to man especially for engine work, so Andy I need to get in touch to discuss options and go from there. Also any tips and hits when do a full restoration will be greatly appreciated, I really want to make this one special bike.

Thanks again for allowing me into this group. Once this project is underway I will post up progress of the rebuild if anyone is interested.

Hi Eddie

Welcome to the forum firstly.

I too found myself if a very similar situation with a classic car with my dad. I had never restored a car but a combination of its sentimental value, and help from forum members made it turn in to a very nice car.

I found that creating a detailed build thread was a great start as people could view it and offer help & words of encouragement.

Wish you all the very best with the project, and sorry to hear about your brother.

Tony

Hello Eddy, and welcome to NSR-WORLD.

I am sure we are all looking forwards to seeing your project develop in honour of your brother. It's a most noble gesture, and I wish you all the best.

Please feel free to PM in the first instance, regarding anything NSR-WORLD/Performance Engineering can possibly do for you, but please remember to keep general technical questions/queries in the discussion forums, so everyone can benefit from the responses.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys.
I'm really looking forward to this project.
Andy, I have tried to pm you but I get a message saying I haven't posted enough in the forum to send pm's just yet.
If it helps my public address ***@hotmail.com (I know I raced an RGV but I have been a huge fan of Doohan since he started racing hence the email address!).

Admin: e-mail address removed to help prevent spam. I have e-mailed you too.

All the best Eddy. What a great tribute to your brother. I'm sure he'll be smiling up there.

Happy to take note of your build, what you do and issues that you may face.
I'm on a similar journey with my NSR. I've just found out I have a 93 NSR250R SP, so keen to 'as you say' make this one special bike also.

Best of luck mate.

Cheers
Popes
