Is there an easy way to check for failed PGM unit?

Fri Jun 10, 2016 1:31 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi Everyone,

I was out on my 1992 NSR250SP (MC21) the other day and it completely cut out on me. Was running beautifully up to that point (don't they always! Laughing )

No spark, dashboard lights all on and strong, battery good. I have asked a couple of people and both have suggested that it could well be a knacked PGM unit. Question is, is there an easy way to test that this is the case without getting a replacement PGM and plugging it in! Can I check it's functioning correctly with a voltmeter and if so, how??

Many thanks for your help

Regards

Luke

In all honesty, the simplest plan is to plug your PGM into another bike!

I'm sure someone local will be along soon, that could offer to lend a hand. There are some good guys in your area! Wink

Failing that, we're based down in Plymouth at GT Motorcycles/Performance Engineering. It's a few hours drive, and of course isn't free, but giving you the option in case you didn't know about us! Smile

Hello guys.
This is a nice thread.
I also want to know if there is a way to test this unit with mutlimeter or something else.
I have the same problem like this one.
But i got the bike non runing i have never ride it. It comes to me with this problem and i trying to fix it.
I suspect the PGM III is failed on ignition side.
I tested all other things on the bike and they work as they supposed to be. RC Servo motor controlling the valves correctly. There is a signal from pulse coils down at the flywheel to the PGM III unit. Also i checked the whole wiring harness each wire one by one.
Kill switch, Ignition switch, Ignition coils working fine. New battery added and so on. But still no spark on both cylinders.
I will never give up until i fix this problem.

You guys are so lucky in your country you have people who ride this legendary bikes and you can help each other with swaping PGM III units and other things on the bike to check their condition.

In my country (Bulgaria) I dont have this luck. So i will be glad if someone knows how to help with solving this problem.
Many greetings Smile
George

There is a PGM111 for sale for £250 on the famous auction site. Might help you if you are after a spare

The manual says that to test it you need to plug it into another bike - doesn't help I know but if everything is good and you don't go you an guess that it's going to be the PGM. I had this problem and when I finally decided to get another the bike started straight away. I now have a couple of spares sourced from that auction website we know and love
