Is there a way to check the VIN?
Hello "Jemaus", and welcome to NSR-WORLD.
In short, no, there is no way to positively confirm the model by VIN, unless you can get an official confirmation from Honda. Some have claimed to have successfully recovered the information, but in my 25+ years involved with supporting the NSR community, I don't know anyone personally that's managed to do it.
If the bike has a wet clutch and non-adjustable suspension, it's pretty safe to say, although by no means definitive, that it's a base R model. If it has a dry clutch and adjustable suspension, it's most likely an SE or SP, but many R models have been updated over the years. Additionally, many SEs have been upgraded to SP spec, simply by adding Magtek wheels, so it's a real minefield.
What I will say, in my personal opinion, is that a totally standard SE (with original, honest, unrepaired/painted OEM bodywork) is worth more than any questionable SP, and an SP with with all its original parts, including usage marks/scrapes etc on the fairings, is worth more than any SP that looks impossibly perfect! There are a lot of sharks out there trying to take advantage of the market, and it really needs to stop! _________________ Andy.
