Best say hello

Thu May 20, 2021 6:25 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi, just thought I’d drop in a quick hello. Had a 2 stroke itch that needed scratching for some time now and have just picked up a MC21 SP in Pentax livery. It’s bone stock and has been in a “collection” for a few years so first job is to refresh all the fluids and give it a good once over. It appears to have had an extensive refresh at some point, but I have little history, so not going to risk it. Couldn’t resist the sound of a set of chambers to remind of the Microns on my LC back in the day so have a set of Tyga SS on the way.
I’m more used to spannering Italian twins as a day job so will no doubt have some questions to raise, but I’ve already found a wealth of info in here.

Hello "nsrnelly", and welcome to NSR-WORLD!

Looking forwards to hearing more about your Pentax. We have a few hardcore Pentax fans here! 😉

Thanks Andy. Very Happy
It looks to be a solid example so should be fairly straight forward to get into service. It'll be when I start tinkering that it'll get more involved! been a good few years since I did plug chops and jetting.

Be rude not to and I'm using the excuse that it'll save the stock parts and keep them in good order Wink If you get a moment Andy, any chance you could cast your eyes on my query in the "setup" section? You're thoughts would be much appreciated Smile

I shy away from setup posts, as many years ago someone tried to file a small claims case against the me for jetting information posted by a forum member [that worked for him] that resulted in a catastrophic engine failure. It took probably getting on for 15 years after that to be persuaded to actually open a setup section for Members and allow jetting to be discussed.

I think TYGA possibly supply a pair of mains with their systems, and best off asking them what they recommend. I'll ask Matt to post something on the thread, as I chat to him most days, but I can't promise anything... he's a pretty busy guy. Failing that, my answer is always to take it to a specialist. Depending on where you are, #1 choice would be Stephen A'lee at Performance Engineering in Plymouth, who is undoubtedly the most qualified in the UK regarding NSRs, or #2 Andrew Sawford at Two Stroke GP Restorations [St. Neots Motorcycles].

Thanks Andy. I fully understand. I’m in a similar position but with a completely different part of the sector. There’s no jets with the pipes. I’ve put 2&2 together reading a few posts and the info on the Tyga site so will make an educated guess where to start. I used to attend some training with one of the lads from St Neots.
I have a few leads to follow, so will go with them and see where we go… what’s the worst that can happen ;p

I spoke to Matt@TYGA today, but as I expected, he was also loathed to give jetting advice if not fully derestricting. (I.e. opening up the airbox.)

Thanks Andy. I'll be going down the airbox route eventually, but the parts aren't in stock with Jap4 just yet. I tore it down yesterday and found quite a bit to do, so no rush. Have you had any experience with the Keyster jetting kits at all? They seem a useful kit for not a lot of £'s. Certainly much cheaper than the HRC kits et 'al....

Sorry, only ever used HRC kits.

As for the airbox, personally I'd go for foam pod filters. They work almost as well as open carbs, but obviously louder than a modified airbox.
