Best Track Tires for NSR 250?

Thu Jul 22, 2021 1:21 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

hopefully getting close to getting the MC18 on the track. Will be used for track days and vintage racing only.
Tire availability seems to be limited by the size. Local dealer says he cannot supply Supercorsas in 110/17 front and 150/17 rear sizes (I know Pirelli shows those sizes available on its webpage). Options are Dunlop Q3+, Bridgestone RS10, Michelin 2CT. Recommendations much appreciated, including whether it is worth going up a size to get a better tire. Full disclosure, I am not fast enough to challenge the limits of any of these tires (at least not intentionally!), but looking for as much confidence as a tire can give.

Tires revisted

Interesting that you bring this up about the Pirelli catalog. When I asked the local Pirelli rep if he could get that 150 he said no. So I asked what tire he recommended....he said put a 140/70 supercorsa on there. Seems odd that a ninja400 comes stock with a 150, but the kids running motoamerica junior cup are running a 140. The rep says the 140 is lighter and has slightly larger diameter than a 150. I'm tempted to try a 140, but I am not planning on any track days for a while on NSR.

Interested to see how this thread develops. Currently my bike has a Q3+ 150 rear on it which was fantastic last year at COTA.

It's very easy to wreck the NSRs handling with oversized tyres, and it takes a lot of suspension work to get the performance back. Of course, if you're prepared to put the effort in, then no reason not to go bigger, but I always strongly advise not to.

That's not just in regards to fitting over-sized tyres on the NSR rims, but also the fitting, for example, a wider NC30/35 or RS250R wheel with corresponding wider tyre.

Thanks Ericandchi and Andy. I suspect Andy was addressing my suggestion of going bigger, and i agree, have seen multiple warnings against that. Never thought of going smaller. Unfortunately my dealer tells me he can't get the 140 Supercorsa either. And Q3+ are back ordered until the end of September which is the ragged edge of the riding season in these parts. The Michelin 2CT is available now and the Bridgestone RS10 is available hopefully early September but my impression is the Q3+ is a significantly better option than either of those. Sigh.
