So E10 is being forced into the pumps here in Ireland at the end of the year and E5 is being discontinued thereafter (Ethanol free petrol cant be bought as it is). This will likely have a detrimental effect on NSR's and other classic 2 strokes. My wife has got a doctorate in Chemistry and she said that taking ethanol out of petrol is easy. Just pour DIW (de-Ionized Water) into the petrol and shake well. The water will bond to the ethanol, as ethanol is water soluble, and the ethanol will separate from the petrol. Then drain the ethanol that is separated at the bottom and boom, apparently you have ethanol free petrol. Has anyone tried this???
I assume 2 problems.
1. The octane is now massively reduced and detonation will likely occur.
2: Detergents and other additives may be pulled out of the petrol along with the ethanol, making it even more undesirable than the original E10.
Or perhaps I'm wrong and this is a great way for us to go back to using Ethanol free petrol in our bikes.
Disclaimer: DO NOT REMOVE ETHANOL FROM YOUR PETROL AND RUN IT IN YOUR BIKE AS IT WILL LIKELY END IN DISASTER.
I’ve seen this done on various YouTube videos for classic four stroke cars and bikes and some people add additives afterwards. They also add a dye to the water to make it easier to see the separation.
I have thought about it but at the moment I’m still using Esso supreme or whatever their super unleaded is called!
well you're pretty lucky to be able to buy esso super. We cant get anything less than 5% here and after 2022 we wont be able to get anything less than 10% ethanol. I might have to look at some youtube vids like you mentioned. I fear 10% ethanol will destroy the centre seal on the NSR cranks
I clicked on that, and quickly clicked off again, and i thought Avgas was expensive !!! _________________ Proud Father of , 05 ktm 400exc supermoto 2018 honda crf rx supermoto
I use Motorex ethanol fuel stabaliser. I researched a few products when the E10 was pushed out. Motorex seemed to be the best option. You can get it in one shot sachets to treat a tank, or a more economical bottle.
