MC16 Rebuild in Germany

Fri Jan 19, 2024 7:42 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Greetings, Everybody.
I´m Elias from Germany, currently 24 Years old and i usually stem from a Classic Motocross/ Enduro Background
Generally i´m interested in older 2-stroke bikes, thus the Japanese twins caught my attention.

got an abandoned MC16, which i found in extremely poor condition.
The previous owner began transforming it to a Racebike (shortening the Subframe, removing lots of parts).
I´m determined to get it on the road again. collecting all the parts, i`m missing for now
(In Germany, theres basically NOTHING availlable, since the MC16s were never oficcially sold here).

Since i´m new to the NSR community, i really lack a lot of inside knowledge and hope to gain it here.

My main problem for now are the papers, which i don´t have. If anyone yould be willing to sell a MC16 Frame with papers, i were happy to buy it.
otherwise if theres an official datasheet anywhere, incluiding power@RPM, emmission, loudness data and so on, that would help me a great deal. (German regulations are a pain in the butt)

Furthermore the previous owner swapped an entire MC 18 Ignition system into the bike. I already managed to get it running, RC Valve is working.
Problem here is, that i can´t get a tachometer reading. I connected the RPM Output of the MC18 CDI (Y/GN wire) to the RPM Input of the MC16 tacho (B/Y wire).
I cannot get a reading that way. I don´t know if either the CDI or Tacho are broken or if they deal with different Signals (Voltage or PWM...)
I don´t have an oscilloscope, so i can´t measure the CDI output for PWM Signals. Measured with a Multimeter it shows about a 0,1 to 0,7 V Voltage dependent on rpm.
Hope there´s some expert here to help me. Alternatively i will have to swap an MC18 speedo into the MC16 Dash.

Also i don´t have the MC18 Idle air solenoids or any solenoids for that matter. Do i need thoose or can i just block the hoses off or plumb them into the airbox?
Happy to buy the MC18 Solenoids, if anyone has some.

Oil Pump was removed by the previous owner as well. I planned on Running premix anyways (As i already do this on all my other bikes), but is there anything, i have to keep in mind when doing so?

Front Brake setup is missing. And nowhere to be found for sale. Got MC18 Rotors and CBR1000 Calipers, which i will have to mill the mounts for myself.
(Studied Mechanical engineering, so designing and manufacturing custom parts is always manageable)

Also i´m missing the shift lever and linkage. currently plan on building it myself, but would definetely be interested if there was something for sale

Parts i´d like to buy:

Mirrors
Shifter+linkage
Front Brake setup
front and rear fenders
Front center cowling
speedometer cable
passenger seat and footpegs
Rear cover (Behind passenger seat)
alternatively single seat conversion cover
stock subframe
(frame) with papers
headlight assembly

I will attach some pictures of my Project, so you can see, what rough shape she´s in.
Sorry for the mess in the garage. Just moved in there and it´s not a lot of space Very Happy

I´m Happy to have joined the NSRWorld community and together we´ll get her back on the road again.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Elias, and welcome to NSR-WORLD.COM! Smile

Great to hear another MC16 is going to get rescued! They're a great bike once up and running properly. Certainly well ahead of its time compared to its contemporaries.

There are some members on here with some very trick HRC spec MC16s that may be able to help you out, although they don't post a great deal at the moment, as work and general life just gets in the way. One of them has just taken delivery of another HRC MC16 from Japan over Christmas though, so hopefully he'll get around to posting about it soon.

Please check out the Members' Content where you will find our Honda approved English Service Manuals for the MC16/MC18/MC21 and MC28. These should help you with some of the issues you may be having.

Make sure to add a "wanted" advert in the Classifieds section, as that can often yeild results for hard-to-find parts. You can often find what you need on Yahoo! Auctions in Japan, but of course those parts do come at a bit of a premium, as you need to pay an agent and the shipping fees, but it's an invaluable resource for rare parts. You can use a proxy company such as https://buyee.jp/

Feel free to post in the main NSR250 Discussion section for more visibility, but please don't cross/duplicate post. The "Members' Builds" page never quite took off as I envisaged, so you may do better posting the the busier area of the forum.

Anyway, check out the Service Manual to see if that can help you more forward a bit, and I look forwards to hearing more about your project soon.
