mounting reservoir for radial brake master cylinder

Fri Apr 09, 2004 12:12 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I'd like to mount a Brembo radial brake master cylinder on my MC21 (10 poser points!) and need to figure out where best to mount a bracket to attach the brake fluid reservoir (there is no mounting point on the master cylinder itself). I was thinking of mounting a small L-shaped bracket, attaching it at the place where the 8 x 40mm pinch bolt secures the upper triple on the right side. This is a countersunk bolt, so I was thinking of going to a 8 x 45mm (since the bracket would block the head of the stock bolt from going into the recessed area) so that about the same amount of bolt thread will still be securing the upper triple. My understanding is the upper triple is supposed to be torqued to only about 9 ft. lb., so there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of load involved. Has anyone tried this (I'm guessing no), or does anyone see any reason this would be unsafe or otherwise ill-advised? Any advice, including alternatives, would be much appreciated. Please help an aspiring poser out! Very Happy
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

I had the very same prob. In my HRC manual it says that the top yoke should be drilled and then tapped just to the left and on the forward facing side of the pinch bolt. They then give a part number for a small bracket to hold the reservoir. (45517-NL5-700) this is a race kit part for an RC45.

I decided (after finding the price of a new yoke) not to drill it and made a bracket from a RC30 reservoir bracket and did mount on the top pinch bolt. It sits very well but as soon as i get an old yoke i will drill it and mount is as HRC say. I wouldnt worry too much about putting it on the pinch bolt tho its not the greatest place to mount them.

Heres a pic of mine... i hope andy doesnt mind a picture on here??

I don't mind the picture because it's only 24Kb... it's when broadband users upload 1-2Mb images that take dial-up users 30 minutes to download that gets to me! :)

Hey thanks Stephen, both for the reassurance that it works off the pinch bolt and also for the picture. And thanks to Andy for allowing the picture to be posted. Very helpful!

I actually setup the board to allow "Links" to pics (as you did), but don't allow people actually attaching the pics, and the NSR250.net server needing to store, and serve the images... Just trying to keep down on storage use :)

Thanks,

PS Jim,

I would for sure make up a little alloy spacer to fill the recess that the OE bolt head sits in (in the top yoke) kind of like a little top hat or something that way when you tighten the pinch bolt up it will be putting the load in the same place as the bolt did when it was all stock.....
Was just an after thought i had.. i forgot to mention it in the first post
