Who's for a challenge?

Sat Aug 13, 2005 8:54 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Newbie here, so bare with me. I've brought a damaged MC21, and since found out that it has a MC18(1989) wiring loom with PGM-II.(A mate rode the bike just prior to the previous owners fall and called it good). Unfortunately I've been unable to coax any spark from either coils,( both coils tested at 12mm spark jump.) I've since fitted new spark plugs, new battery. The bike is now at the machanics, who tells me he's tested two second hand PGM-II's with no joy, stator and pulse gen tested as good. I find myself at a bit of a dead-end. Any tech info/advice will be much appreciated, thankyou kindly.

Sounds like you may need new coils then. I believe the coils froma 125 fit, but can't remember which one. MBX perhaps?

If you want to buy new, check the part number section, and take the number toyour dealer, they should have no trouble ordering the part. Just buy one to start with!

Where in the world are you? Maybe there's another owner nearby who can help by swapping parts into your bike.

One thing to check before you do buy new, is the connectors to the coils. They tend to get opened up, nd cause a build up of carbon / crud which eventually stops the coils from firing. Check the connectors there, and clean / replace as neccessary.

Thanks for reply Dave Ett, now that sounds promising, I was left with the impression 12mm was healthy, and left it at that! So what length of jump do you reakon is required? I'm guessing ignition was left on for considerable time, would this cause coil damage?

Oh ok, so the coils did spark then? Your post was a little confusing. 12mm is fine.

What did the fall damage?

No spark

Hey, sorry about the confusion, should have read; unable to coax any spark from either spark plug. The damage is reasonably minimal, basically the bike clipped the back of a car that was reversing from a driveway, hit the ground then hit a curb. Other than the sticky-out bits it's just? a case of replacing front rim (curb) and front fairing, ( all other fairings have been welded and are now ready for priming). With a new batt fitted the RC servo does'nt show any signs of life?. Thanks for your interest, It's appreciated.
