I think Andy and the fun bunch should bite the bandwidth bullet and allow us to have avatars.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Yeah, been thinking about it.

I'm happy to store a number of avatars on NSR-WORLD but I'm not sure if I'd be prepared to have an "upload your own" just yet, as you know how protective I am of the Site appearance! Smile Also, I wouldn't want people uploading 200kb animated GIFs as avatars and slowing the whole experience down for those still on dial-up.

I will call a meeting on the subject! Wink Maybe we will see what the feedback is like and then trial it.

My vote's always going to be for taking the shackles of the picture limitations ... if it's externally hosted of course; don't expect anyone to provide picture hosting when there are already ample free sites out there.

Chill dudes, you could host the site on a server in the UK for virtually zip, BT's recent data and internet deregulation means that fat pipes to servers are cheeeeeep and anyhow, you wouldn't need to host anything, people could host their own images and link it in when they are on line or just use link to something on the net.

You can't go penny pinching forever or you end up not evolving - things have not changed here much at all appearance wise so maybe the time is right ?

Surprised

I don't like avatars. Makes a site look like crap. Adds to much busy stuff to the pages.

that and it makes it hard to "surf" the pages at work Wink

Binka, just for your information, the Site currently runs to 125Mb in size, not including the Marketplace and the Forum, both of which are hosted on nsr250.net's servers. I currently pay for CORPORATE hosting out of my own pocket, so let's not go on about "penny pinching" eh?

Also, just for your information, only 2 (read TWO) Forum members have seen fit to make a donation to the upkeep of the Site, one of the reasons for bringing the Marketplace online. As I am sure most people that have made purchases will agree, the prices are very competetive, so profit margins there are extremely minimal.

For over 5 years now we have provided a free resource to the small NSR community that I am very proud of, all at personal expense. The Site is often changed and developed according to feedback from users, but you wouldn't believe how hard it is to even get people to proof read for me. Often the only feedback I get is to contradict us or point out simple typing errors, "Ooh, in the spec's it says this, but in my book it says that", that type of crap! Everything in the Technical Resources section for example, is there purely because it has been asked for directly by Site readers!

I spend on average 40 hours a week, usually more, working on some aspect of the Site, be it answering the numerous e-mails that could be "self answered" if the individual would only take the time to either read the Website or search the Forum, reading Forum posts and replying, researching and translating various Honda media, and editing images/content. Can you imagine just how long it took to scan 200 pages of the MC16/18 parts manual, optimise the images, and then format all the data (in English) and add just half of it (MC18) to the Online Parts Manual?

Sure, the Site doesn't appear to be updated as often as I would like, but there is a lot on that the outside world doesn't see. You know yourself how precious time is, and trust me, the majority of my free time is spent in front of this screen! I'm currently trying to find the time to teach myself SSI to make updating various aspects of the Site easier and quicker to update, so although it's not visible to the outside world, work is always in progress.

I thought about the avatars and also spoke to Charles (the Forum Administrator) about it this evening, and we are in agreement I'm afraid, avatars are not to be made available for fear of disrupting our uniformed (if maybe bland to some) look and the possibility or increasing download times for those on narrowband connections.

Bit of a long winded reply, I know, but at least you are now in view of all the facts that I take into consideration whenever the site needs to progress! Smile

Regards,

Most of the users on this site don't have egos, so we simply don't need avatars to draw attention to ourselves. If that's what you're in to there are plenty of sites out there for that.
This forum's strength lies in it's simplicity and it's intelligent content. It doesn't need clutter and gimicks.
Many of us still use dial up and avatars slow things down unneccessarily.
