cylinder types

hi all,

i just wanted to ask how you know what type of cylinder you have.
is that the part number that is etched into the side of the cylinder?

On the intake side, there'll be a letter, or no mark at all. Mine have 'A' stamped on them.

Ummm... i talked to a quite reputable mechanic here in my town and he says there are 2 types of cylinders.?

H type and L type? true?
mine has H1 and H2 on it....

its done by letter, and you order them using the letter taken off the piston, but he may also be right.

They have those on their too. I dunno what they mean, but those are moulded into the barrel at casting, whereas the letter is stamped on.

I'm not going to say there is no H1 H2 L or whatever but if it's the casting marks they're probably not something to concern yourself with, the letter we're looking for stamped on and dicates the correct piston to use;

'A' Cylinder - 'B' Piston
'B' Cylinder - 'No mark' Piston
'C' Cylinder - 'D' Piston

Check the clearance anyway, not with a verni-eye gauge either and if you're replating send the piston away with the cylinder and say what clearance you want rather than trusting something to chance.

The casting signifies "R" spec or "SE/SP" spec.

Since mine is an SP, I can safely say the L is for SP barrels then.

I hope. Unless my motor is lying to me...

Great I have 4 barrels off two dry clutch motors. 2 have L2 and the other 2 have h1. I was going to put a L2 and a h1 on my bike. do these marks really mean anything. If so what, or is there a link to something that explains the diffrences.

i hear the H and L barrels vary in length.

i think the matching head must be used for the corresponding cylinder to keep the correct compression....

Oooh Great, I measured the lenghts of the my cylinders. The H1 cyclinder is shorter then the L1 cylinder. Does anyone know if the cylinder heads are different? They have diffrent #'s on them. What is the best combo of base gasket, cyclinder and head?
