Trying to wake a sleeping NSR, advice please.

This bike has been sitting idle for more than a year, maybe even two, but supposedly ran great when parked. So far I have installed two new spark plugs, put a little oil into the combustion chambers, used spray lube to free the throttle cable, throttle mechanism and choke, tested and cycled the electronic power valve, repaired the fuel petcock, drained the tank and put in fresh high-octane and just generally cleaned and looked it over. The battery won’t take a charge, so I’ve been powering it from a car battery. After some kicking, it ran for a few seconds, but never for long enough to say I was successful. I’m open to any tips on what I should do to get this motor to fire, both of my legs are sore this morning. I’m trying it with the choke all the way on, is this correct? Air box is off, if it matters. Thanks.

Back the choke off, My R needs the choke fully open to sart it starts then i need to back it off to half, and its fine, the other thing to do is catch it on the throttle, when it satrts slowly open the throttle and back the choke off at the same time, if its running for a few seconds, back it off... there will be other advise along soon, Oh yeah the se i have dosent need choke AT all unless its really cold.

The jets in the carbs may have clogged up or the float bowl is full of crap

Yup you need to take the carbs off and go thru them cleaning all your jet. Don't forget the power jet.

Just had the same issues with mine.

The main problem was all the green sludge in the carbs, whip off he float bowls remove your main jet its holder and the slow jets.

Soke them in full strength coke, yes coke and leave for 24hrs, the brass comes up like new, but I had to soke the slow jets for another day as they were full of shite and were very stubbon.

Give them a rinse, blow through for good measuer and try again, also clean the float's plungers they gum up to, ohh dont forget get to give your needles a whipe a they can attract the green stuff to.

And put a fresh battery in for good measure, and check how dry the air filter is.

Actually, Luke's such a Coke addict that when he says give them a rinse, what he really does is lick all the Coke off 'cos it'd be a waste otherwise.

Well.....probably

Last night I got it to run for a while, but only by pouring fuel directly into the mouth of the carb. I guess this means that you are all right and the jets are clogged. When I disassemble, do I need to have a gasket kit to reassemble, or can I reuse what gaskets are there?

Matt, I heard luke is now off full fat Coke due to the fact it was turning him crazy! Saying that when we did some MX on the way home he had to buy about 2 gallons of it for some reason Wink

Good luck getting your power jets out too and cleaning them, those alloy caps can be real tricky unless you have a screw drive that fits perrrfect!

Luke's right though, you're probably all bunged up.

Don't do the cleaning half arsed or you'll kick yourself. Clean them properly and blow all the passages through with air to be sure. Then clean again.

I like to squirt carb cleaner through all the holes as a final attack just the be sure they're clear

And the answer to his question... No you shouldn't need any gaskets. The float bowls are sealed with O rings, so they can be re-used hunderds of times. They only need replacing if they're leaking.

If you do decide to remove the Power Jets for cleaning, make sure you have EXACTLY the right size screwdriver for removing the blanks. If you don't you'll destroy them, and never get the jets out.

I really is worth buying a new screwdriver if you don't have one that's fits well enough.

Good to see another NSR in NC. Good luck with the project and probably need to change the gearbox oil as well.

OK, thanks so far. I've got the carb on a my (now) clean bench, and the jets are soaking in Pepsi (diet, I hope it works.) Now, what's the best way to lube the main slide? Wet (oil), dry (graphite), or nothing, just clean and leave totally dry?

Thanks again.

Can't say I've ever oiled one to be honest. Alloy is quite self-lubricating as a metal, and any lube you put on there is likely to collect dust and cause grinding of the surfaces.

My main jets have a through hole all the way through the body of the jet, head to tip. My slow jets (SJ) have a hole in the lower body where the atomization holes are, and a hole in the top where the screw slot is, but these holes don't seem to connect in the center. Is this supposed to be a through hole, like the MJ? If so, i'll push a little harder with my tiny pin, if not, my cleaning is done.

This is an image of a very small slow jet, a #35...

As you can clearly see, there should be a hole all the way through it!
