sp vs r cylinders

in a recent post I read there was a diference between r and sp cylinders for an mc21 , when buying a second hand cylinder is there a way to tell between the two

i may be able to help with the barrels as i have a pair from a r model i am in the uk
not to sure about the differences thats one for andy i reckon
