Another oil leak

Thu Dec 29, 2005 2:29 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

All this talk of leaking oil brings me nicely on to another topic. Two days ago I started up the MC21 to go for a trip into town. Whilst it warmed on the drive for about five mins, I noticed that a pool of oil had stared to develop beneath the bike. Not a big one, about an inch or two in dia. It was dripping outta the overflow pipe.

Anyway cos I'm mechanically ham fisted and didn't want to miss those bargains I rode into town anyway.

It didn't leak again over then next two days and everything seemed to be OK, that was until this afternoon......

On a quick blast round the North Circular to Ikea (don't ask) I trashed it through the gears, something you can seldom do in central London. During the ride I noticed that the oil was again starting to drip outta the over flow.

So........ Could anyone tell me where this oil would be coming from? Is it gear oil or two stroke? Why does it only appear to happen occasionally? The bike is now laid up so I'd like to know what next to do before I ride it again.

Which overflow is it leaking from...ie where does the other end of the overflow pipe connect to?

Not true !! Twisted Evil

The NC is a great place to go silly, particularly if your name is Mike and you can't keep the front wheel of the FZR on the ground racing a bigger bike Laughing

Sounds like the two stoke oil may be leaking into the gearbox oil. Have you noticed it using much 2T oil?

To check it, put a catch tray under the bike and open the gearbox oil cap. If oil floods out you have the well known pump seal problem.

If it's not that, then you may have a blocked breather causing an overpressure, but it's hard to believe since there's so little pressure in a normal gearbox. Could be an amazing failure whereby the crank is pressurising the gearbox!

I've not notice it using 2-srtoke as I've only toped it up once since I got the bike. I'll go check the breather and gear box later...... if it stops raining.

If my memory serves me correctly the oil pump seal is the one that's a sod to get hold of......right? Better find an o-ring dealer that's open over the Xmas period.

Wish me luck

It's a funny size Tom, but there is usually no reason why you need to replace it.

Clean everything up and "bond" it in with a little silicone. Job done! (If that's the problem, anyway!)

Just an up-date. Opened the gearbox oil top-up thingy and sure enough oil gushed out. So it looks like 2-stroke oil had gotten in.

Pulled off the oil pump, and whatcha know, the oil seal was half way down the pump shaft. Stuck it back in with some gasket sealant and fingers crossed a week later the thing looks to be holding out.

An easy job, took about an hour. Should have taken some photos for the NSR250World workshop section. 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Cheers for everyone’s help…..especially Andy.
