What model do I have?

Mon Jan 16, 2006 12:26 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I just brought home my NSR250 yesterday. I was reading in the tuning section and it sounds like there were different variations of the MC18? How can I tell which one I have? The frame says nsr250r J model and the VIN# is #MC18-1012896 but I have seen 5k, sp etc... It sounds like these are different variations of the same model?
Thanks,
Ken

There were four different versions of the MC18, specs can be found on this site & also Jamie's site.

The basic run down:

On January 19th 1988 the NSR250R 2J was released in Fighting red & white & Terra blue & white colour schemes. An SP model was released on March 15th 1988 in Rothmans racing colours which had Magtek magnesium wheels & was designated the R4J.

The second version of the MC18 was released in February 10th 1989 & designated the R5K for the standard 'R' models & R6K for the SP. The newer MC18 had sharper styled bodywork, pretty cool looking higher set silencers, new rear suspension, PGM II & wider tyres. Colours were the same fighting red and white & Terra blue colours of prevous years (made to look a little sportier), but a new Black and gun metal grey debuted as well. All NSR's were speed restricted from 1989. The 1989 SP had magnesium wheels, new dry clutch and came in Terra racing colours (which personally i think looks arse). It also had fully adjustable front forks & fully adjustable rear shock with reservoir.

From that info, you should easily be able to tell if it's an 88 or 89 MC18. If yours in still wearing standard paint you're laughing (Laughing) But MC18 SP's are pretty damn rare now, so it's most likely a standard 'R' model (like mine).

Thanks for the reply skooter. I was told it was an 89 but I am thinking it is an 88. It was originally blue/white but aparently the tank got in a fight with a fork lift when it was in the boat to come to the US so it is all primered as of now.

This is going to sound barmy, but I have no idea mate Confused

Basically i picked the bike up from Plymouth (eBay job) & dropped it round to a guy i know who was going to do the rebuild for me. I haven't seen the bike since. He sent the cylinder & head off for repair to a local company for repair. All i know is that it's costing more than first quoted (but it always does) & it's taking FOREVER. God knows why the piston kits taking weeks to arrive, but there ya go...lucky i'm in no rush.

I did ask my mate to have a look at the other barrel, but he must have forgot. Rolling Eyes

I've yet to tell the missus that i've bought another bike, as we're getting married in July & we need to save 5k in 6 months(!)....so didn't think she'd take it too well yet. I'll tell her on our wedding night Laughing Also think she was relieved when i sold my last bike, she used to worry apparently (awwwww bless).

You're gonna waste 5k on a wedding? Shocked

Why not get married somewhere exotic and sod the guests - they'll have forgotten the party long before the loans are paid off...

Dave, the 'average' wedding costs at least £15,000, we're budgeting on everything we can & ours is creeping up to that figure Sad

Our friends have just got engaged & their reception alone is costing £15k! Shocked

Wish it was costing only £5k Crying or Very sad
