i've got an MC21SE and it's started overheating. i can start it up to warm it up but it's fine but after less than a kilometre the temperature skyrockets
i'm new to bikes but i figured it's the thermostat seeing as i have plenty of coolant (unless anyone else has any suggestion?)
anyay after pulling the fairings, seat, tank etc i was a lil daunted at the location of what looks like the thermostat (up near top spark plug?)
what is the best way to tackle it?
from the top?
side?
i had a quick look from the top and it looks like gotta move/remove the wires in that box and the throttle cable?
any tips would be appreciated, pics would be even better.
also as far as i know there are no service manuals in english? i've looked online but havent found anything
It is quite a git to get to, but is tucked into the top left corner where the down tubes meet the main chassis spars.
I think you need to remove the left hand fairing and coolant overflow tank to get to it, (not sure as I run total loss).
Are you going to fit a new one or simply remove it? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

- remove all your lower cowl.
- put a drain pan under your lower head hose connection
- pull the lower head hose connection and let all the coolant drain
- disconnect the hose from upper-left of radiator
- remove coolant overflow bottle (2 bolts, 1 nut, 2 small hoses)
- remove your seat and gas tank
- remove upper head connection hose
- disconnect 2 wires from thermostat housing
- slide the entire thermostat assembly with hoses attached out of the engine area. _________________ Paul Herr

there just seems to be no cooling when the engine is running so my guess was teh thermostat has died on me.
I can't recall the exact science of it right now. It has something to maintaining proper pressure in the cooling system. The radiator cap is a fairly important componant of the modern pressurized cooling system. From what I've seen is the most common fault of overheating. Besides, its cheap and easy to replace. What do you have to loose? _________________ james

thanks mate, i've done most of that so far, just need to get the actual thermostat out, it doesn't help having big hands working in such a small space
