Yahoo Japan (was: owners manual)

Sat May 06, 2006 6:42 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I took me a while, but I was finally able to register for Yahoo Japan. Went to bid on a couple items and discovered none of these sellers will ship overseas. I wrote a couple notes to sellers but have not head back.

You won't be able to bid without a Japanese bank account either.

You can if you set up the account to bill to a credit card.

I had an account when I was in Japan, but cancelled it after moving here to the US. There is a monthly fee involved with Yahoo Japan even if you dont use your account.

And if you ever get on there and start using it, here is a tip: dont even try to snipe with last-minute bids like on Ebay. The default bidding function on Yahoo Japan Auctions will tag on an extra 5 minutes if you bid any time within the last 5 minutes. In other words, the auction truly does not stop untill the bidding has stopped for more than 5 minutes. I have seen some go hours past their original "end date/time". Some auctions dont have this, but the seller has to choose that option when they set it up.

And no, most of the sellers will not deal internationally. It would be like asking someone from the US to learn Japanese just so they could speak to you.

Interesting, but it sucks. I wonder if that 5 minute rule would work here with ebay? I guess I'm going to have to find somebody in Japan to buy for me. By then I probably won't need anything though.

And an interesting tool for some basic Japanese into English translation?

http://world.altavista.com/

Copy and past the Japanese text you want into the webpage and tell it to translatre Japanese to English. It's a little hard at time, but you can pretty much make out what is there.

There is really nothingyou can do w/o a buying service. All the sellers expect to be paid by banktransfer from a local Japanese bank or via the post office. Almost all items are shipped local COD and I've only run into one guy that spoke English.

If you ask real nice, there might be a couple of people from this forum that are over there that will help you out? Parts are only hard to get if you get in a hurry......

You could always try asking/bribing Jamie (http://www.dreamgate.ne.jp/nsr/ you'll find his email address on his website). I believe he's helped out a few guys before.
