My newly acquired MC21 seems to use an awful lot of 2 stroke oil (full tank in around 400km's or so). It also smokes quite a bit. I checked the pump when I first got it and aligned the marks with a fully open throttle - it was actually set a little 'rich' so I thought that adjusting it would cut the smoke a bit but it hasn't seemed to do so particularly noticeably.

Is that kind of consumption normal? It seems to use a lot more and smoke a lot more than my TZR 3XV's. The tank could be smaller of course and the 3XV oil feed is fairly sophisticated - adjusting the oil feed according to revs and engine load so it's pretty frugal on oil.

Do any of you fella's run the pump backed off a bit? And if so can you offer any pointers? Ie: How much? I'm tempted to back it down a bit, but, obviously, don't want to damage my motor.

Any guidance gratefully received.

my MC21 uses considerably more oil than my misses RGV but I put this down to the fact thats it's pushing round twice the weight

No idea how much mine uses, i just top it up every time i come home. Once the oil pump seal went on it, and oil slowly drained through to the gearbox, and out the breather tube causing a fair amount of oil usage. Not possibly that is it?

Using Silkolene Comp-2 at the mo', Dave. And at the rate it's drinking the stuff I can't afford to put anything better in it .
I actually reserve the use of fully synth to my 3XV SP with TZ top end in fact, as I tend to be of the opinion that today's semi synth is so much better than the oils these old bikes' motors were designed with that using fully synth is overkill if the motor is stock, like my MC21

There are no obvious sign of any 2t in the gearbox, but I'll check the seal as I'll be having the 'box out and the clutch apart soon as I'm still not remotely happy with the way they work.

Anyone run their pump 'lean'? Or would I just be begging for trouble?

Mine absolutley drinks it compared to my Aprilia and it's set spot on, probably more ££ on oil alone than the RVF cost to run totally. Monkeys is even worse and smokes a lot more, he laughed openly at me when I suggested we turn his down.

They actually run on oil, the fuel is simply used to cool the piston crowns...

I use that Silkolene Comp-2 plus in my 18 and it loves it but I'm changing to Castrol R2 as I like the smell better but its £13 a litre + £4 p&p ,If your in this country then someone on e bay sells Comp 2 plus in 4 litre cans for £31 inc p&p,I use to buy from them .My 18 does use a lot but I only have another 18 to compare it to but as for its fuel useage,I put 9 litres in yesterday and have done 40 miles and its now back on reserve and I'm only riding it to work and back at a slow-ish speed and its stock but this means Iv'e found a use for my R6 as I will be using it for work now as it's cheaper to run that my NSR .

That sounds crazy consumption! Maybe you're running mega rich?

9 litres, 40 miles? Sounds about right to me, I've seen Wayne's version of taking it easy. My RVF is a good 3 times cheaper to run (all in, fuel and oil) than my '28.

Just for some figures on this went to scarborough to watch the racing at weekend steady run averaging 65ish most of the time for 210 miles I used 700ml of oil misses on RGV 100ml mate RD500 200 ml

That kind of difference is bizarre isn't it? I did close on 600 miles on the 3XV last weekend (RD rally up in Ashbourne, Derbyshire - you should've come to that instead. It'd have been a lot easier on your wallet ) Most of which was motorway (200 miles each way averaging 70 - 100mph) Used about 900ml of oil (just topped it up to measure). Sounds like if I'd have gone on the NSR I'd have needed a Silkolene tanker following me

The 3XV tank only looked about 2 thirds empty though, so maybe it's a bigger tank and this makes the NSR consumption feel so much worse to me as I'm topping up more often? What's the volume of the 2t tank on a 21? Anyone know?

Having said that, your figure of 700ml in 210 miles sounds just plain mad - if your figures are right, the NSR uses more than 3 times as much oil as a bike with twice the cylinders (the 500) and 7 times as much as a comparable twin cylinder bike (the RGV). Where the hell is it all going? Using my figures, the 3XV would've used about 300ml for your journey. Tho' as mine was prob a much higher average speed due to the 400 + m/way miles, we could prob drop quite a bit off that; but I doubt it would've dropped down to 100 ml. All of which suggests that it's the little Suzuki that's the most frugal. Obviously these are not like for like comparisons (diff riding styles, road types etc) but it is quite illuminating all the same. Thanks for going to the trouble to measure.

BTW - the racing at Oliver's mount is mad isn't it? - used to go a lot when I lived in Hull. Have you ever done a few laps of the 'circuit' when it's quiet up there? Quite how anyone has the 'nads to race around there is entirely beyond me. Heroes or fruitcakes, I can't work out which

the racing is pretty mad it's the first time I've been and only expect club level racing which most of the riders are but then you get the likes of Ian Lougher Chris Palmer Guy Martin and Ian Hutchinson.

We did a lap round the track Monday morning (as it's all closed roads for those who don't know) but there where loads of people there cleaning up so didn't get chance to have a flyer, but it's really tight in places and that jumps amazing. Big gonads I reckon
