mc 16 strange noises

Thu Oct 05, 2006 6:22 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

hi there this posting is probably only going to confirm my worst fear but here goes:-
i just gave my bike an oil change and check over then went for a little blast out where upon opening her up i began to hear a harsh bearing noise coming from the clutch area of my engine!!!!!
so i pulled the clutch and hit the kill switch then pulled over,re-chercked the oil level and began to hope she hadn't seized.so i started her up again with the noise still present gave it a blip on the throttle (rightly or wrongly) wher the noise went away.so i nursed her home where the noise was intermittant and not altered by the clutch operation.

DO THE GEARBOXES GIVE ANY TROUBLE OR HAVE MY MAIN BEARINGS JUST GONE SOUTH

Hard to say what the noise is, but one thing is for sure, crank bearings do not rumble one minute and then be ok the next, so its not going to be the crank.
Drain off the gear box oil and check for metal flake in the oil.

The gearbox comes out no problem at all. RC46 has posted about gearbox removal, when he fitted his dry clutch. Have a look through.

well a lot happier this morning after i replaced the gearbox (what a doddle) when the post man delivered my new clutch nut to find loads of little bits of shiny case hardening in the bottom of my gearbox case, cleaned all the bearings in the crankcases and fitted the new/secondhand gearbox and took it for a ride gently to start with then as i usually ride on the edge of the redline no noises to report only a slight weap on the gearchange oil seal which i have ordered from my local bike shop.

just looked at my old gearbox and the bearing on the output shaft is very notchy.

thanks very much for your help and this box had done 38000klm so not too bad then.
