Spring in Spain!...

Thu Nov 09, 2006 10:12 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

OK, so I'll start the new thread! Smile

Right then... Spain! Ideas, suggestions, and questions here please!!

I like Wayne's idea of the GP if it's in Spring. I love "hot and sunny" too, but not in full leathers! Spring or Autumn it is please!

I think the point of the venture will be to ride. If a "service" van came along though, I don't see why we couldn't all take turns in diving a stint. One bike in the back at a time won't hurt, but it would be prudent to take a decent tool box, a selection of spares, and a load of camping equipment or something.

Dude,

I am actually planning on a trip to Spain and Italy in the spring! Two GP's back to back. With some ceviche and chianti mixed in between. Oh ye, and motorcycles?

Oh ye, your things showed up today Andy. Will post those and the other item tomorrow.

Ah Damn! Ceviche is only a southern thing. Fine, I'll find some other Spanish dish to enjoy.

Well I can offer up my Wife's Ford Galaxy and we can use a 2 bike trailer or just hire a large van and split the costs.
Infact Get the van and get my wife to follow us in her car as well she could take you wife Andy if she Fancy's coming.
I always take a week off around Easter so a trip to Spain on My NSR to watch a GP sounds good to me.

I think you're crazy if you want to ride all the way to France on an NSR! I've done it on my FJ which is setup properly for touring, and 1500 miles in ten days on that is hard enough!

Considering the likelyhood of a crash or engine going pop, I'd have thought a van was essential. If you consider that european break down cover will cost you about £70 per bike, then hiring a van will probably work out cheaper.

If you camp, you'll need a van to take the gear - look how much I took last year:

F1 hotels are cheap enough, but you'll bump the cost by having to eat out every night. Camp sites are usually between £5 and £15 a night, depending on whether there's a pool!

Not saying it can't be done on your NSR's, just that I've done a lot of touring, and have learned the hard way!

I think Dave makes a good point, nsr's arent for mile munching they are for thrashing around twisty roads. If you got the plymouth to Santander ferry we could spend 3 or 4 days thrashing around the hills and mountains of north Spain rather than 3 or 4 days travelling to and from somewhere on motorways
I would love to go to the Jerez gp but I think this is normally in March and most of Spain is still quite cold plus the fact Jerez is 989 km from santander or 2135 km from Calais.
Thats a lot of back ache on an nsr.

I'd be up for a slice of that, Andy. I do a mini weekend 'tour' every year on the 3XV, but it's prob only about 500 or 600 miles or so over the weekend (the RD rally in Derbyshire). Travel light, and touring on a little stroker is not necessarily uncomfortable.

The Plymouth/Santander ferry crossing sounds like a good idea too though. Arguably better than flogging it there and back along the inevitable motorways though France. Or maybe even ride down to Spain but take the ferry back? It's always more fun going than it is riding home, and it's less hassle if anything goes pop if you know that you have a ferry booked back to Blighty.

Either way, it sounds like a plan to me.

You can get a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao in north Spain.

I don't mind riding from the North to the SOuth. Come on you bunch o' girls! The way I see it:

- Hire a van. I'd say a sprinter or similar so we have room for everything (I also have a van now actually with a towbar so this is also an option...)
- Portsmouth to Bilbao as Wayne suggested.
- Turn based van driving I think is ideal and fair.
- Get Stephen to provide spares, beer, spares, women and beer.
- GP at Jerez.
- Ride back.

LOL simple! It's not too hard to sort really. Like I said, i'll happily organise, but I'm away right now.

Does anyone have the dates for the GP? What about suggestions for timescale. I don't think you could realistically ask people to commit if you wanted to do more than 5-7 days...?

We'd need a van definately to carry all the premix that some of us use...

I can't do any dates round then, as my training is reaching it's climax! But I'm happy to provide info and enthusiasm for the rest of you!

And be jealous... Confused

I think the first thing to decide is do you definetily want to go to a gp or spend 3 or 4 days riding around spectacular roads in the north of Spain.
Another option to going to Jerez is the catalunya gp on June 10th. We could go across from Bilbao travel across the top of spain through the pyreenes and drop down the costa brava coast to Barcelona. My spainish road atlas gives bilbao to barcelona as 614km ( Bilbao to jerez 994 km) a distance much more do able in a days riding plus we would be travelling through more suitable nsr territory. This option could give the best of both worlds. I think realisticly Jerez would be 2 days travelling without the ferry trip which i believe is about a 24 hour journey making it nearer a weeks trip but going to catalunya could be done in a long weekend making it more viable and giving the chance for more people to make the trip.
By the way max I will definetely sponsor you, I considered doing this myself but I would have probably ended up paying most of the cost myself.
