Single side swing arm

Fri Jun 09, 2006 4:10 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Why did Honda flip the the swing arm over for the RS250 (right chain drive as opposed to left like all the other single sided swing arms)? Is it possible to convert to a MC28 swing arm and install a NSR250 motor?

No because the motor has a different V angle. Reduced from 90 to 70 degrees. This makes the motor more compact allowing the swingarm to be made longer. It's the kinda thing Yamaha made a big song and dance about with the R1 when it was launched. Aids handling I guess.

Anyway the frame is shorter that the NSR one so I doubt the motor woulld fit.

OK, but why did they flip sides with the swingarm?

Chain run

I think it is because the engine runs the other way around, ie if you look at the left side of the bike at the crank, the crank rotates clockwise instead of anti clockwise. The reason for this was to inhibit wheelies and get better drive out of corners.....

the old 90 degree RS250 engine (nf-5) from 1990-1992 will fit with into te NSR Chassis with very little work.
