Clarity on Engine

Sat Jan 20, 2007 6:55 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi,
whilst I am mustering up the courage to buy another 250cc two stroke that I will not have time to ride, I would appreciate if someone could help clarify the engine situation.
  1. Are all engines marked MC16?
  2. which engines are compatible across which models - bolt in, plug in or more complex?
  3. Which engines have cranks that are easy to rebuild - do they all have the press on covers like RS250?
  4. do all engines use the same centre bearing with integral seal?
  5. Similar to 2 above, but electrics
    • Which ignition pickups and alternators fit which engines i.e. tapers, mountings
    • which engines and alternator sets can be used with which electrics
  6. which clutches and gearbox are compatible across which models - are they all the same
  7. are the cylinders the same across all models - do the same heads fit apart from round or octagonal, and exhaust pipe flanges in the same place?
  8. are teh reed cages/rubbers same across all models
  9. any useful information I may have forgotton
Hopefully this will get teh gray matter working and make a good thread!

Cheers to all who help, Vincent

1. All production engines are marked MC16

2. MC18 onwards engines bolt into '18's, '21's and '28's. The '16 motor uses a different rear lug.

3. All can be rebuilt, the chances of finding a good one lay with '21's and 28's. No the NSR crank isnt like the RS one.

4. MC16 and 18 use a seperate seal, the 21 and 28 use the same integral seal but cant be swaped with 16/18.

5. Mc16/18 gear boxes are the same, '21 and 28 are the same. All can be interchanged though.

Electics wise there are just so many variables.... some 16 stuff can work with 18's. no '16 stuff works with a '28 (infact 28 stuff just doesnt work even on a 28 ). Some late '18 fly wheels will work on '21. etc etc.

All reeds are the same. MC16 uses small inlets, MC18 uses inlets with integral rec's, MC21 uses same reed block as a '18 less the rec's. Mc28 uses a different one withoiy boost bottles.
