Confused

Thu Apr 19, 2007 2:40 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

I was reading the tuning section of the site and came across the HRC cards and the wire splice bit.

After reading the HRC card bit, from what i understand the text is basically saying that you need a different loom and card to make a decent difference, other wise using a standard loom and a differnt card you will make a tiny difference if you additionally tune the carbs and use an after market exhaust...is this correct or am i totally lost?

now for the wire splice part...i understood that if you perform the wire splice it would derestrict the advance, ignition, etc fully like it would if you used a new hrc card and loom (racing spec one or what ever)... is this right or yet again am i barking up the wrong tree?

i need to get this sorted so i can decide on what model of nsr to buy...

thanks in advance

MC18 and MC21 just need the wire splice.

MC28 needs an HRC card, but you either need a race harness, or you need to splice the standard one, but you loose functionality of some street components.

What's not so clear to the total NSR virgin;

The mc18 and mc21 use a normal conventional key like just about every other bike in the world, the mc28 does not, it uses a credit card sided "smart card" instead which slots in under the clocks and is matched to the individual CDI.
Said card contains some of the ignition map as well as what to display on the LCD dash (the MC28 has just a rev counter and a small LCD rectangle.
Without any card at all the bike cannot be started.

Even with pipes, airbox mods etc. the standard Honda card is still a massive restriction, you need the HRC card for anything near 60 bhp.
But you'll lose the speedo, low oil warning, side stand cut out and neutral indicator as the HRC card make the display into nothing more than a big temp guage.

Here's the HRC card;

And it in it's place (just below the digital display on the left);

All of this is irrelevent if your going to choose model based purely on performance/value as you definately are not going to buy a '28.

You buy a '28 for one reason, you want a '28.

The '21 is far better value, cheaper to buy (probably 2/3rd's the price at the most), cheaper to derestrict (i.e. free instead of several hundred pounds) and definately no worse a bike in any way.

My bike uses an HRC card and has added, just to the left of the display, a neutral and low oil lights. They were installed and look very professional and stock. I think it was a great addition.

so the 28 can be fully deristriced if u use a splice? however, you will loose the speedo, neutral light, etc (headlights?)

so buying a fairly "expensive" Shocked (mc28) bike (only to mod it and loose half the road gear Confused ) isnt worth it if you ask me... ill stay to the 21

having that said, im hoping the 21 wont lose its road gear...just have a better ignition map (ie 3rd) to use in 4th, 5th and 6th?

Fear not, splicing the GPS just to use 3rd wont affect anything else.
