Hi, as you can see, I'm a n00b here, so forgive any n00b-like annoying questions.
I did try to do a search, but obviously typing mc18 here will give you around 1000 pages of results, so...
Right now, I have two bikes which I'm desperately trying to get rid of. One is a CBR600 F3 which has given me nothing but trouble since the day I bought it (it's currently in the repair shop, where it's been for the last month), and besides, it's too fat, and only exciting above 200kph which is hardly practical in terms of "safe-ish" (ie not dying the instant you hit the ground) fun. I also have a TZR250 3XV which I'd also like to get rid of because it's unreliable as hell, every month something seems to wrong with it (and no, despite what it may seem, it's NOT that I thrash the hell out of them or neglect them, far from it, i've just been unlucky with these last 2 bikes - my last bike, a VFR NC30 gave me not a single moment of trouble in all the time I owned it.. really regret selling that one).
Anyway, I'm not going to let any dodgy private sellers rip me off again. so I'd prefer to get from a dealer (yes, i know they can be dodgy too.. but, lesser of two evils). so, there's a daler in town who's got a very good looking, original condition (I think, outside appearances anyway) for a pretty good price. I realise that this is an older model NSR and that spares are becoming rare, but these were popular here in Sa and a lot of places break them up and still have a stock of spares for them so I'm not too worri about that.
My question, to anyone who does own a MC18 - how RELIABLE are they?? I'm sick of having bikes that are utter pieces of shite (like my CBR600..grrrr). Provided you take care of them (warm em up nicely, just use top quality synthetic 2 stroke oil, ect - I've owned other 2 strokes before and really enjoy them had a RZR135 which was very very reliable), do MC-18s start up easily? Run consistently? Break down at all? any common problems (like VFR regulators which are notorious?)
Basically, could I own one of these without it driving me mad and costing me a fortune in monthly repair bills?
If you can break a CBR600 don't touch a two stroke! _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread

Haha yeah, I know how this must sound! But seriously, my CBR600 is just a lemon. It's not that I've tried to fit a home turbo kit or poured sugar down the gas tank or anything.. the damn thing has had EVERY elctrical problem that could happen to a bike happen to it. When it got stripped down, turned out it looked as if the thing had been rewired by a 2 year old. turns out that the regulator is faulty, (which previously caused the fuel pump to fail and fried the battery - both times on a freeway in the middle of nowhere, as you've gotta phone a mate to come and haul the heavy thing back to town ("yep, me again, yep, cbr600 has died in the middle of nowhere, again") a new one has been ordered but seems to be taking forever to get here.
My TZR250, ok, it's not as bad as my first post made it out to be. I discovered it had also been worked on by a backyard mechanic who fudged a good few things up, which I've since sorted out- but then I got it reaaallly cheap so i knew a few things were wrong with it when I bought it, did so with the intent of fixing it up and reselling, which I've done and am ready to do (before random electrical problems strike again, which was the last problem). It's actually running really well at the moment and is a lot of fun. I love two strokes, so i have no doubt a MC18 would be a sweet ride. The only problems with my TZR are now cosmetic (missing rear pegs and a front mudguard, and has a disgusting paintjob, and I'd rather flog it than fork over more cash to get it resprayed proper colours).
So, back to the topic, any MC18 owners, how reliable are your bikes? Anyone?
I don't think I have ever heard of a CBR600 breaking(?) All two stokes can be expected to require more service, but there on some people on this board that have many trouble free miles. I consider 2-strokes more of a toy that serious transportation.
I think what should be a large part of your decision is how many miles this MC18 has on it and how it was cared for. Cranks are generally only good for about 20,000 Km (or was that 20k miles?). Was is kept inside or outside? Has it been derestricted? All these things can effect its future life. _________________ james

Yeah I'd also heard that CBR600s will run for a million trouble free km, most reliable bikes ever, etc etc... I just happened to get saddled with the one CBR that was an absolute piece of junk.
anyways, thanks for the advice. I know most 2 stroke cranks have a fairly short shelf life, and piston and rings need regular replacing, etc, i've no problem with that kinda maintenance, as long as the bike doesn't regularly have random breakdowns.
As for this one looks like it's been kept inside, the paint as i said is original (the red and white (terra, I think it's called?) colour scheme) doesn't seem to be a respray as it's a litte faded (but not badly so as it would be had it been kept outside). I'm sure it's been derestricted, most grey bikes here in SA are. Forgot how many km are on the clock, wil have to check, and ask about the previous owner and how well he took care of it.
There's also a MC21 I noticed for sale too... will check it out, also original paint and a good price too...
