On the way home this afternoon I crashed the NS250F right at the top of the Pennines near Blackstone Edge - a lamb crossed the road right in front of me at 50mph+ (and I was still accelerating so it could have been higher).
There was no time to react so I hit it and got thrown down the road for about 100m.
I have broken a bone in my right hand (metatasle) right before the knuckle, which is apparently a nasty fracture in the worst place to break it; cracked 2 ribs, and generally battered and bruised my knees, left thigh and left forearm. I nearly passed out with delayed shock when they were doing the cast, was put on oxygen and moved to observation for an hour with suspected concussion. It turns out the internal swelling from the cracked ribs was putting pressure on my left lung, which meant I wasn't getting enough oxygen. It's not so bad now but still hurts a little when I breathe.
As a consequence, at the moment I cannot ride, but at least I'm in one piece. My helmet and trousers are wrecked. The bike has just suffered a bit of road rash though - a new headlight, and a new lower end can and it will be sorted.
Shame as the 14/44 gearing was spot on and it went like stink up to 180kph.............
Ooh, nasty Phil, but at least you're (now) OK, even if in a bit of pain. Could've been a lot worse, and I'm glad it wasn't.
The pain in the ass is that although you can't ride at the moment, you are also not in the position to pull the barrels off for a peek inside! Would've been good to take the opportunity to fettle them. _________________ Andy.

That sucks. Does the owner of the sheep have to pay for damages? _________________ james

Yes it's unfortunate that some of our best bits of twisty road cross open land where this can be a danger especially in springtime. A shame really because the lack of hedges allow good visability. Watch out especially for lambs seperated, by the road you are on, from their mothers . They will choose the moment of most panic (ie just when you are nearest to them) to dash across. Be aware they are especially dangerous when sandwiched against a barrier (hedge, fence, bank etc on one side), same thing happens. In the evening after a sunny day stock is often attracted to the warmth retained by the tarmac. I don't think you can claim from the farmer but that he could claim from your insurance for the 'value' of the lamb. Sorry about the damage to yourself and your bike. It could have been worse, on Dartmoor you have the ponies and in Scotland deer (at night).
On topic, I would have thought that either the landholder or road authority would have been required to fence the road boundary so things like this didn't happen. Do accidents like this happen often in england? _________________ If I have to take the carbs off once...

I was in no state to go back and look, but the guy with the recovery truck said it was a right mess.
Don't know if I can claim off the farmer, wouldn't even know how to trace him.
The place it happened was at the very top of the Pennines (they are mountains, but only just at around 420m altitude). Livestock there is not fenced in at all.
Still in a lot of pain, reckon I'm getting tolerant of the painkillers given to me by the hospital. They have signed me off work for 5 weeks.
Is it worth contacting a "claims direct" type "no win no fee" claims solicitor?
