My MC18 has developed a problem where winding on full throttle anywhere below about 7k rpm just causes it to die and then surge for a few seconds before clearing and reving normally.
If the revs are over 8k though it will handle full throttle just fine.
Does this sound like carbs need to be pulled off and cleaned out?
I think that it is a good place to start. I am doing the same now. The weather has changed significantly so I am going to rejet and clean the carbs out.

This is obvisouly first thing you should do. I had the same problem on my one. The bike was going full speed in the first three gears, but after was just dying. You should do the following
* Clean the carbs
* Check that the outlet of the fuel tank is clean (Sometimes due to low quality fuel might be blocked so not enough fuel is going to carbs). _________________ Burn the soil, not the soul.
I had problem once with my TPS, eventually had to replace it. Worth a check if you can. It controls the ignition map and is a mechanical part even though it is part of the electronics so on our venerable MC18's it might be getting "old"
Not sure what resistance values should be but it should change smoothly when you open the throttle. _________________ If the rats eat my wiring one more time....
Makes sense. You runing without a filter? _________________ MC21SP Plaything

I have a new filter in it now but when i got the bike the filter was in pieces with lots of gaps so maybe it got past then and just took its time to cause a problem.
