looking to buy a mc21 approx 1990 . basically how much is one in average to good condition worth ? . are they all restricted ? . are they hard to find (rare) ? any general buying advice / what 2 look out 4 ? regards john ..
( currently own a rgv and ns400r ) ..
Whats the model? SP, R? They can go for almost any price. WHen I bought my MC18 I paid the equivlnt of 300GPB. Sure it was banged up but after some work (still ongoing) she's really running well. I just saw an MC21 SP advertised for the equiv of 1500GBP but have a look at whats on offer in your local advertiser. Since you already own a NS400R you'll understand that these bikes (mainly due to their age but actually due to their superiority ) will require YOU to be the mechanic most of the time. If you're cool with that then just go thru the paces of purchase.
Things to look for that I'll recomend; Make sure the RC valves are woking, not just loose but that the servo is actually opening AND closing them. You can find way too much info on how to check this on the site. Does it run on premix or with a functional oil pump? Depending on your pref. and intended use, you can make a choice on this (track use - premix, regular road use - autolube). Check all the normal stuff like tread wear, chain and sprockets. Look for pitting on the forks since it could lead to having it all re-chromed and rebuilt (messy messy).
Presuming it's a std roadbike make sure;
The frame is straight.
The forks are straight and in decent nick.
If you want a nice road bike, make sure all the bodywork is o.e. Honda.
As mentioned make sure the RC valves work, take it for a test ride, even resticted they run well in the first 3 gears. It's pull OK till around 8000 rpm or so, then may splutter a bit if it's not been used much or pootled through town too much as it comes onto the pipe but should then pull briskly and smoothly round to 11000 or so, If not it could just be setup, or it could be the RC servo.
Std and restricted it'll feel a world away from a std UK RGV, smooth (to say it's got no balance shaft), quiet and TBF a lovely roadbike.
All the girls who buy CBR400's as they're small should buy MC21's as they just as small and 40kg lighter.
Yes they're all restricted, a hole saw and a soldering iron are all you need to sort it out though. Andy can do them the dark.
21r, 1990? hard to call really without seeing it, under £1500 probably and it's the wrong time to year to sell...maybe a grand?? _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
MC28's generally start about £1000 higher than the equivalent MC21.
SP's always fetch a premium, although an SE with Magteks, or an R with a dry clutch and Magteks is an identical bike! All the motors are the same, all the ignitions are the same, pretty much everything is the same!
All MC21's will make 60~62hp with a soldering iron and a 20mm hole cutter, providing the motor is in good nick. Fenton's totally standard MC21R was dyno'd "before-and-after" last summer, and gained a free 16hp in less than 10 minutes!
I thought I had graphs of Fenton's 21R pre and post-op', but I can't find them. StephenRC45 will probably post them if you ask him nicely, and then I'll do a composite of them! _________________ Andy.

2 x 20mm holes in the front slope of the airbox lid.
4 holes are better, then you can always tape 2 off for a quick change if you want to jet it a bit "on the edge" but find yourself caught out on a cold damp night... eh StephenRC45?! _________________ Andy.

1. Have you looked at prices recently? Bill Smith's in Chester had / have a clean looking 21 SP and want £3995 for it.
2. An R would require adjustable suspesion too, are you getting forgetfull in your old age Andy??
I think that now that NSR's are getting rarer and rarer people are a lot less likely to part with them. Mine's not in mint condition a point with which too many members here are too willing to take the piss with. even though saying all that I wouldnt let it go for less than 5 grand because it really is the best bike I have ever ridden / owned. _________________ If you dont like the way that i ride.....Stop trying to keep up!!!!!
